By Staff Writer Saikou Kujabi, Banjul

I will  kill anyone, who wants to destabilize this country.  If you think that you can collaborate with so called human rights defenders, and getaway with it,  you must be living in a dream world. I will kill you, and nothing will come out of it.  We are not going to condone people posing as human rights defenders to the detriment of the country. If you are affiliated with any human rights group, be rest assured that your security, and personal safety would not be guaranteed by my Government. We are ready to kill saboteurs.” These were the exact words of Gambia’s President Yahya Jammeh Monday, as he threatens to take the lives of people suspected of undermining his Government.  Jammeh  in a televised address  warns about dire consequences against individuals bent on undermining the peace, stability of tranquility of the impoverished West African country.

The President never explained what might have triggered his latest outburst, but insisted in no uncertain terms that Gambians, and non Gambians arrested on saboteur related charges would be murdered in cold blood. He said his administration would no longer condone what he calls so called human rights activists in the country. “If you are looking for a trouble, you better stay away. I swear to God that if anyone is caught tarnishing the image of my Government would be KILLED!!! You would be dead. I mean this, and there is no sympathy for saboteurs,” the President said.

The raging Gambian leader, who appeared angry, said he is aware of certain folks being used to smear the image of Government, but warns anyone caught would be murdered.  He said people should not be fooled by Human Rights Group for legal aid in the event of a court action instituted against them by the state.  The President believes that taking people to court is a waste of time. “ From now on, we will kill anyone trying to sabotage this country. Don’t be fooled by Human Rights Groups. They cannot save you from dying. We will kill you, and nothing will come out of it,” the President threatened.

Jammeh’s threat followed revelations made by the erstwhile Daily Observer Editor Kemo Cham that he was working on a special report about the disappearance of Ebrima Chief Manneh, a  Daily Observer reporter who went missing for the past three years. Cham blames Momodou Sanyany, Saja Taal, and Pa Malick Faye for the disappearance of Chief Manneh. He alleges that the men named therein instigated the abduction of Chief Manneh.

The Freedom Newspaper also reported about the promotion of over 249 soldiers, a move which was widely described as an inducement on the side of the President to prevent a possible coup.

Jamemeh left Banjul Monday for the UN Summit. He is expected to arrive in the US late Monday evening. He issued the threats shortly before leaving the country. Many here believe that the President is trying to scare the military from toppling his Government.
