Gambia’s President Yahya Jammeh, in exercising powers conferred on him by the constitution, has appointed Almami Fanding Taal, as a high court judge, with immediate effect, the Freedom Newspaper can reveal. Mr. Taal a former state counsel himself, is the newest judge to join the country’s bench. His appointment, followed a seven year active service as a legal practitioner.
Currently, there are fifteen high court judges in The Gambia. Taal’s appointment came at a time when the judiciary is experiencing a backlog of cases. Cases are being delayed due to inadequate judges.
Among the cases in limbo at the high court is the matter involving a Nigerian woman accused of murdering one Mr. West, a wealthy Briton. The said case has been dragging for years.
With the recent appointment of more Judges, people believe there would be speedy trial. That justice would be dispensed without any further delays.
The newly hired judge Almami Taal was running a joint business with a friend of his, prior to his appointment. He told reporters that his business partner, who was also recently hired by the Government was his childhood friend.
Taal left the AG Chambers, and went into private practice. He is also a human rights activist. He has written extensively on issues relating to human rights, and constitutional law.
