Senegalese Grammy winning musical star Fatou Laobe, suffered an untold harassment, threats, and verbal abuse from her colleagues, who are on tour here in the United States, she told the Freedom Newspaper in an Exclusive interview Tuesday evening. Two Senegalese artists: Fatou Gewel, and Ndey Marie Njie Gawlloh, have been accused of verbally abusing the popular Senegambian musician Fatou Laobe, who was greeted by huge crowds in major cities across the United States.
At Cincinnati, Detroit, and Atlanta Georgia, Fatou Laobe explained how she was repeatedly insulted by Fatou Gewel, and Ndey Marie Njie Gawlloh. She informed the Freedom Newspaper that the two were out to provoke her, and possibly lure her into a fight, which she said is against her doctrines, and work ethics as a renowned musician.
According to the aggrieved musician, who held a successful show in Raleigh North Carolina, this past weekend, her colleagues also wanted to stain her records in the United States by trying to “blackmail” her on allegations of causing a fight. She said Gawlloh, and Gewel went as far as spreading misinformation in the Senegalese media by claiming that she was involved in a brawl, while in the United States.
“ There is no iota of truth into their misinformation campaign. I was able to restraint myself, even though they repeatedly rained insults on my person, including my parents. Their plan was to lure me into a fight so-that they can get be arrested. I was informed by a mutual friend ahead of time about their vicious intents. I don’t believe in violence, or character assassination. I am here to make my fans happy. I don’t have time for such troublemakers,”she said.
Upon landing in the United States, Fatou Laobe lost her Senegalese Passport at the airport. While trying to locate her passport, she was assisted by veteran musician Kineh Lam. Her colleagues Gawlloh, and Gewel drove off, leaving her behind.
“ They started manifesting their hostile, and malicious behavior at the airport, when Keneh Lam prevailed on them to wait for me to locate my lost passport. They said my problem is my problem and they had to leave. They left me behind. I had to look for a ride to find my way out of the airport,” Fatou Laobe said.
In Africa, showing respect to the elderly, is a highly cherished cultural value. No matter how rich one is, he or she is expected to treat his elders with respect. Fatou Laobe tried to do just like that, when she offered to help musician Kineh Lam to move her luggage.
“ Fatou Gewel, and Ndey Marie Njie Gawlloh were not happy that I volunteered to help Kineh Lam move her luggage. I am 40 years old. Kineh Lam is far older than me. By virtue of her age, Kineh Lam deserved to be treated with respect. If they are angry with me for helping Kineh Lam, then so be it. My conscience wouldn’t allow me to watch by without extending helping hand to Lam,”she noted.
Fatou Laobe said she made numerous attempts to broker peace between her, and her colleagues, but Gewel, and Gawlloh wouldn’t acknowledge her gestures. She said the two were out to destroy her person, and career as a musician.
“ I think this was a well calculated conspiracy theory-designed to end my career. I am too smart to be lured into a beef. I am contacting the Freedom Newspaper to set the records straight. I was never involved into any fight. These people are out to smear my image, but God wouldn’t allow it. I am a law abiding citizen, and no amount of provocation can make me lose my temper. I always try to stay out of trouble,” she said.
Well, the Washington DC show, witnessed a dramatic twist, as Fatou Laobe could be seen shedding tears on her chicks. Her fans were taken aback by Laobe’s sudden outburst. Fatou’s fans could be seen crying as well. It was a somber night in DC.
“ I had to explain to my fans about the reasons behind my cries. I was being real with them. I told them that I was being persistently harassed, and persecuted by Gawlloh, and Gewel. That, the two insult, and verbally abused me,” she said.
Fatou Laobe also lamented about Gawlloh’s open defiance to leave the stage, even though her prescribed time had elapsed. She said the artist was interested into having a beef with her, but in her own words “ I am not going to waste my time engaging her. I am glad that I was able to make my fans happy. They presented all kinds of gifts to me while on stage.”
Fatou Laobe and her touring colleagues are expected to play in New York City, and elsewhere across the country. She told the Freedom Newspaper that she would never take part in any future tours with Gawlloh, and Gewel.
“ I have learned my lessons from this tour. These people have proven to me that they are haters, and are out to destroy me. I will continue to come to the United States to entertain my SeneGambian fans, but not with such troublemakers,” she said.
The Freedom Newspaper tried to reach both Gawlloh, and Gewel for their side of the story without success. We also tried to contact Omar Jaw, one of the tour organizers, but his phone was on voicemail.
Madam Laobe said her doors are open to the public including the media. She said she has nothing to hide.
“ I want to assure my fans in New York, and elsewhere in the United States that they would get the best kind of entertainment they wanted during my shows. I will never let them down. I am here to make you happy. I have some good stuffs lined up for you. I am not interested into any drama, or violence. I am a peacemaker,” she said.
She attributed the hostile conduct of Gewel, and Gawlloh to jealousy. She said the artists are jealous of her success, and popularity in the United States. She said her future is in the hands of God, and not from any single individual. She said she believes in Allah, and would not be intimidated by troublemakers.
