Michael Scales Explains His Ordeal With The British Airways!!! Dear Sirs,
Thankyou for your contact and your request for an insight to my British Airways experience.
I am afraid, your company may be in for a rude awakening.....shortly.
Having booked the flight for my Nigerian wife...HRH The Princess of Afa, Niger State, Nigeria, via your website. I remain disgusted and outraged at her treatment.
For as a British citizen I was barred from paying for her ticket using my Bank of Scotland Visa/debit card.
Your booking clerk would not accept payment over the phone by this method,,,sighting that Nigeria is a fraudulent country and that its citizens have caused so much financial loss to British Airways, when booking flights via this method.
Your clerk also sighted a similar experience from citizens of South Africa.
I explained politely that I was a British disabled citizen and was used to paying by the convenience of the debit card and in 30 or so years ,, no one had ever refused my ability or preference to pay by this method. The Bank of Scotland, is an account held since 1988 and I have every confidence in their ability to complete my transactions from my financial assets that they hold in my name.
I further offered to contact The Bank of Scotland to authorise them to pay the required amount you requested, directly into British Airways account. I asked for your Bank details for this and was refused.
You then offered me only two methods in which to complete the transaction to your satisfaction.
The first was to arrange the process through a travel agent.....I refused on principal for they would add their fees to your price, for their intervention.
The second was to travel the 240 miles round trip to Manchester Airport, whereby I could pay at the British Airways counter in Terminal 3. I decided that as my wife was needing to travel urgently to attend to her sick Mother {The Queen of Afa} that I would engaged this route to complete the transaction and remove my wife's anxiety for her urgent and necessary visit.
On arrival at Manchester Airport I asked the clerk which method of payment do they require as I was carrying enough cash to cover the £754 fee. The clerk said that she was happy to take either visa debit / credit card or cash..which ever is the most convenient for me.
I paid by Visa debit card. The transaction was completed within 5 seconds and my payment entered British Airways Bank account instantly.
I freely offered my bank account details during this process, knowing the guarantees by Law governing such transactions.
My wife is a citizen of Nigeria. Her eldest sister in a practising Barrister at Law specialising in childs/womens rights.
She has nine other Barristers at Law within her family including two uncles who are Senior Advocates of Nigeria {SAN}
Her Aunty is the Leader of the Women's Bar Association in Nigeria and works in conjunction with The President of the Republic.
My wife is distressed by the inference made to her country and her people.
As a British citizen who has done much to further the bilateral trade ties between Britain and West Africa.....I find your attitude suspect and your intentions and manner offensive and not conducive towards good trade relations.
Perhaps you would be good enough to further this complaint to the highest position within your company, in the hope of a thorough investigation and proper response with an unfettered and sincere apology.
Respectfully......Michael Scales.
