Gambia’s President Yahya Jammeh summons an emergency meeting Monday morning, in which the Freedom Newspaper recent lead story captioned “Breaking News:IGP Badjie’s Blackmailing Schemes Against General Tamba, And Others Exposed” was the main subject line of discussion, sources here said. The Inspector General of police Essa Badjie, Interior Minister Ousman Sonko, Immigration Director Sakou Drammeh, NIA DG Numo Kujabi, and other service heads were in attendance. The confused looking Gambia President, who downloaded the said Freedom Newspaper lead story was outraged by the revelations contained in the news report.
Despite the Iranian President’s visit to The Gambia, Jammeh had to summon his security team early Monday morning to discuss the security ramifications behind the Freedom Newspaper story. He was concerned about the source(s) of the said report, which is seemingly attracting Presidential reaction.
The President, in a speech at the said meeting, he implored on the service chiefs to help contain information leakages within Government agencies. He then decreed that from now on all security officials should declare the number of cellular phones they had in their possessions.
A new taskforce has been assigned to investigate the phone records of officers suspected of supplying information to the Freedom Newspaper. The President believes that there are “elements” within the security forces undermining his administration through the dissemination of classified state secrets on this paper.
Immediately after the Presidential emergency meeting, various service chiefs organized briefings with their men, in which they informed them about the Executive order to disclose their cell phone numbers. This latest move, would help GAMTEL, the main telecommunication company to trace phone records of officers suspected of sharing information with the online media, sources said.
