The National Youth President of the opposition United Democratic Party, Momodou Lamin Syngle Nyassi has said that the Ruling APRC is on its way to decent burial come the next Presidential elections. Mr. Nyassi said the APRC is adjusting itself to avoid the imminent fall, but the party’s main pillars have started cracking and that it is on the verge of collapsing. Mr. Nyassi, who suffered numerous arrest and persecution from the Jammeh administration said come the 2011 elections the APRC under the leadership of President Jammeh would be buried in the
cemetery. He said the administration of Yahya Jammeh has lost the support it used to command from the grassroots. He says Gambians are displeased with the current political dispensation and are in dire need of change.
Speaking in an Exclusive Interview with the Freedom Newspaper, Mr. Nyassi said the APRC has ceased to function as a political party, following the major crack on its leadership and are hell bent on provoking the opposition into the form of permit denial to hold political rallies. He observes that the APRC has no proper structures on the ground to run its day to day political activities and it is using Government institutions-such as the police to harass the opposition.
Mr. Peters said in a true multi party democracy environment, Government institutions should not be used as political organs for the powers that be. He accuses the Jammeh administration of using the police and other sister service agencies in the country to bully the opposition. He says under a free and fair political process, the opposition UDP can win the APRC in any future elections. But Mr. Nyassi expressed strong reservations about the ‘unleveled political playing field ”in the country. He said Jammeh has outlived his productivity as a President, and thereof should call it quits before it is too late.
Commenting on the recent political happenings in the APRC camp, Nyassi said this a blessing in disguise for the country’s opposition. He cites President Jammeh’s widely publicized witch hunting spree, the recent arrest of his close confidants, prolonged detentions, and dismissals of civil servants. He says the Jammeh Government is on the road to decent burial and come the next elections Gambians would deliver their verdict against such a rotten system.
"I want to take this opportunity to call on Gambians to vote for the UDP, because the truth is now surfacing and even those within the APRC and his praise-singers are beginning to admit that Jammeh's system has cracked. No one in his administration is safe-since he is now arresting them without any given reason and that is not in line with the dictates of our constitution,” Nyassi noted.
Mr. Nyassi said there is no human rights and rule of law in The Gambia. He accuses the President of constantly violating the constitution, even though he Jammeh had sworn to defend and uphold the constitution. He describes Gambia’s case as “sad and regrettable.”
