Winners To Receive $1000 US Dollars
The United States based Freedomnewspaper.com is organizing a journalist of the year award contest for Gambian based journalists. The award which is the first of its kind—since the paper hits the worldwide web four years ago, is aimed at promoting press freedom in the West African country. Interested Gambian journalists can submit their journalistic work—be it news articles, or commentaries for the past year (2009) to the editor@freedomnewspaper.com Awardees could also be nominated by the members of the public. There are two awards to be presented to the winners of this grand award:
Political Reporter of the Year: Cash Price: $500 US dollars
Developmental Reporter of the Year: Cash Price: $500 US dollars
The award is jointly sponsored by the Freedom Newspaper’s Pa Nderry M’Bai and his paper’s main financer Michael Scales of the United Kingdom. Both Mr. Scales and Editor M’Bai have expressed the need to motivate our hardworking home based journalists by extending such an important award to them. Feel free to participate.
There is a taskforce assigned to scrutinize the nominees. The results would be announced on March 1st 2010.
In a statement issued today, Freedom Newspaper founding Editor and Publisher Pa Nderry M’Bai said “ Mike and myself believed that the best way to motivate our hardworking reporters—is to award them for their untiring services to the Gambian nation. We intend to maintain the award. It is going to be a yearly thing. I am footing for the bill for the political reporter of the year, while Michael Scales is financing the Developmental reporter of the year.”
Mr. M’Bai said the Freedom Newspaper’s fourth year anniversary, which was due on February 3rd would be celebrated in a grand style this year, through the form of an award presentation. Mr. M’Bai also spoke about plans to issue an award to the missing Gambian journalist Ebrima Chief Manneh. He says once the deal is finalized, he would keep the Gambian public abreast with developments.
