IGP Badjie, And Others Detained At
Mile Two!!!!
Prisons Overcrowding In Gambia
By Staff Reporter Modou Barry, Banjul
The country’s maximum prisons Mile Two is becoming increasingly overcrowded by security detainees, as a new batch of detainees were admitted there, the Freedom Newspaper can report. The dismissed Inspector General of police Essa Badjie and a score of other service chiefs were arrested late Tuesday afternoon, and detained at Mile Two Prisons, sources said.
It would be recalled that President Yahya Jammeh Tuesday dismissed the Inspector General Ensa Badjie, Rear Admiral Sarjo Fofana Navy Commander, Colonel Mam Matarr Secka Commander Military Police, Lieutanent, Famara Jassey Army Headquarters, Major Kuluteh Manneh Army Headquarters and Leutinent Colonel Abdoulie Jatta Commandant GNG.
As at press time, no reason was given for their arrest and dismissal. The men have joined the list of security detainees at Mile Two, who are capable of overpowering the prison wardens—in view of their immense security training. Concerns are being raised over the overpopulation of the country’s prisons system.
President Jammeh was recently quoted as saying that the security of the country is paramount and that anyone who is against the nation’s peace, and stability should leave the country, as his administration will not condone any form of security sabotage in this country.
Meanwhile, a British national name (withheld) is rejoicing over the sacking of IGP Badjie. The Briton in an email to the Freedom Newspaper said he welcomed Badjie’s sacking, and expressed the hope that President Jammeh would join Badjie at Mile Two soon.
“How pleased I was to see the IGP's new hall of residence is Mile Two Prison, When the Gambian people get a new President lets hope they give Mr Yahya Jammeh a room next to him, soon. Regards, the Goatman,” the letter reads.
