A prominent human rights activist Edwin Nebolisa Nwakaeme was Monday arraigned in court in Kanifing on charges of giving false information, after spending over one week behind bars, the Freedom Newspaper can report.  Mr. Nwakaeme, who is the Director of Programs of the Africa in Democracy, and good Governance, could not take his plea Monday. He was placed back in police custody, pending the next hearing of the case—which was scheduled for Wednesday. He is currently held at the Banjul police headquarters.

The human rights advocate was arrested some weeks ago, and has since been under police custody. He was being investigated by Gambia’s police serious crime unit on allegations of giving out false information. Details of his case have not been forthcoming as police said the full trial of Mr. Nwakaeme would led to the disclosure of the circumstances of his indictment by the state.

According to sources reaching this paper the Nigerian born human rights activist was first arrested on February 22nd by plain clothes officers, and was briefly held at the Kairaba police station before he was handed to the New Jeswang Immigration officials.  He was held there and later released on February 25th 2010.

Few days after his release, Nwakaeme was rearrested again, this time was held by the Banjul police. He is expected to appear in court on Wednesday, sources said.
