By Staff Reporter Fatou Barry, Banjul

As the National Drug Enforcement Agency recovers from last week’s “Hurricane Kanilai”—which swept the Agency’s top brass, news just came in that the President Yahya Jammeh has appointed three “no nonsense” officials to take charge of the affairs of the beleaguered Agency, the Freedom Newspaper can report.

The appointment of Commissioner Kalilu Njie, former third in command at the Drug Squad hierarchy as Agency’s new Director General has been announced.  Assistant Superintendent of NDEA (ASP) Pateh Jallow, who used to be the officer commanding of Serre Kunda Drug Squad is now the Agency’s Deputy Director, while Commissioner Mbye Njie has been elevated to the position of Operations Commissioner, sources said.

The trio, are all former members of the Defunct Gambia National Gendarmerie—with a “sound” track record of dedication to  national duty and commitment, sources reaching the Freedom Newspaper elucidated.  The appointment of these officers, said our sources would go a long way in revamping the discredited image of the National Drug Enforcement Agency, whose erstwhile Management were linked to socializing with drug dealers, and other corrupt practices undermining the reputation of the Agency.

According to sources, ASP Pateh Jallow had effected numerous drug apprehensions during his tenure as the OC  for Serre Kunda, and Sibanorr respectively. Mr. Jallow has been highly hailed for his uncompromising stance in weeding out drug lords in the country. Sources said  Mr. Jallow is “not only courageous, but fearless so to speak.”

A source close to the police headquarters  has called on the new hires to avoid being bought by powerful drug lords, who according to our sources are ready to spend millions of dalasi just to win the hearts, and minds of those running the agency—including the police command. The source however, noted that he has no doubt in his mind that the new hires would live up to expectations—given the fact that they were able to overcome such challenges posed by influential drug dealers.
