Death Row Inmate Captain Bunja Darboe Says Gen. Tamba Instructed Him To Write The March 2006 Coup Speech

TREASON TRIAL TAKES UGLY TWIST!!!

As State Obtains “Incriminating” Statements From Captain Bunja Darboe And Co Against Gen. Tamba

By Staff Reporter Fatou Cham, Banjul

The treason trial involving the former Chief of Defense Staff Major General Lang Tombong Tamba, is taking an ugly route, as the former army chief Monday accused the Nigerian born lead prosecutor Richard Chenge of lying to the court by suggesting that he (General Tamba) instructed former army Captain Bunja Darboe, who is serving life imprisonment to write the March 2006 foild coup attempt speech. General Tamba rejected the DPP’s assertions describing it as “lies” and unfounded.

The former army chief said the state is recruiting former felons such as Captain Bunja Darboe, who was convicted of coup plot in a bid to frame him and his “innocent” accused persons. But the DPP maintains that General Tamba was part and parcel of the March coup, and had even promised  to free to Bunja Darboe and others once he succeeds in replacing Jammeh.

The DPP said Tamba had in the recent past pleaded with Captain Darboe and co not to mention his name in the March coup attempt—with the promise of freeing them once President Jammeh is toppled by the ruminants of the coupists in active duty.

     Captain Darboe AT DPP’S Office?

Appearing before high court judge Justice Amadi in Banjul, General Tamba was led in cross examination by DPP Chenge. Mr. Tamba confirmed that he knew Captain Bunja Darboe, who is currently serving life imprisonment at the Mile Two Prisons, following (Darboe’s) involvement in the March 2006 foiled coup. General Tamba said he and other soldiers foiled the said coup that was led by the erstwhile Chief of defense staff Nudure Cham.

To the chagrin of the court, General Tamba engaged DPP Chenge into a war of words, when the DPP tried to link him with the March coup.  Tamba informed the court that he was aware of the “sinister” plot being spearheaded by the state to use treason felons such as Captain Darboe and others to implicate him.

While denying having any ties with the March 2006 coupists, General Tamba testified that former army Captain Bunja Darboe was seen at the DPP’S office in Banjul on Friday May 28th 2010, with the view of taking statements from (Bunja Darboe) to lie against him General Tamba and others.

Mr. Tamba said it is a “lie” for the DPP to associate him with the March coupists when he (Tamba) helped to safeguard the government of the day from being toppled by some army renegades, who were obsessed with power.  General Tamba adduced that the conspiracy to blackmail him by using treason felons was the height of dishonesty on the side of the DPP’S office.

General Tamba then questioned the sincerity, and reliability of  Captain Darboe—saying that if he (Tamba) was involved in the March coup as alleged by Bunja Darboe, why didn’t he (Mr. Darboe) mentioned his name during the treason trial.  He testified that there was no iota of truth in the DPP’S assertion—calling it a fat “lie”.

DPP Chenge then countered “ You asked Captain Bunja Darboe not to mention your name, and you will make him not to stay at the prison.” In response General Tamba who appeared very angry remarked “ That’s is not true. I am currently detained in Mile II, and I realized that it is not a favorable condition for me or any other prisoner to live that condition. Darboe was called by the DPP at his office just to lie.”

The DPP went on to  alleged  “ You also promised the coup plot team as you did to Darboe that you will get them out of that alleged coup.”  Lang retorted by saying “ That is a lie. I do know for a fact that all those who were linked to the March 2006 c0up were taken to the NIA  office so that they can lie against me for my involvement in the alleged 2006 coup plot which was “masterminded” by the then CDS Ndure Cham, just to find a way to be pardoned.”

The fearless former army chief said he was not aware of his involvement in any coup attempt against the current administration. He added the he is aware of the fact that the former treason felons are prepared to fabricate lies against him in a bid to be granted amnesty by the President Yahya Jammeh.

DPP  Chenge countered “ Mr. Tamba, Bunja Darboe stated in his statement that you were involved in the alleged 2006 coup plot.” In response the embattled former CDS said “I am surprise to hear about my involvement in that coup.  Bunja Darboe is the greatest liar in the world. How could I be part of a coup and again led a team of loyal soldiers to foil that coup plot.”

As Chenge and Tamba exchanged accusations, and counter accusations in a charged courtroom,  the DPP told General Tamba that he and some police intervention unit officers pursued Colonel Ndure Cham at his Brufut residence in 2006 to seek his arrest, a statement Tamba flatly denied.

“That is a lie.  I went to Ndure Cham’s house at Brufut with some soldiers with the intention of arresting him and by the time we reached his house he had already gone. The PIU  officers were not under my command that is a mere imagination, “said General Tamba.

The trial resumes Tuesday.
