Drama unfolded in Barra Monday, when the wife of the National Drug Enforcement Agency Operations Director and her brothers attacked anti narcotic officials, who were executing a warrant to search a compound suspected of being used for marijuana trafficking, the Freedom Newspaper can authoritatively report. Salma Faal, who is the wife of Mbye Njie, the current (NDEA) operations Director, was engaged in a brawl, as she and her brothers physically assaulted drug squad agents in Barra yesterday, leaving Sergeant Korita seriously injured, a sources in the heart of the police command in Banjul said. Mrs. Faal and brothers resisted arrest, as narcotic officials seized a large consignment of marijuana locally known as “Jamba.”
The Barra fight between the wife of the National Drug Enforcement Agency operation chief and the NDEA arresting team turned out ugly, as Madam Faal’s family joined the fray, which left an official of the NDEA hospitalized. Sergeant Korita and his men were overpowered by Salma Faal and her family, leading to the summoning of a police backup to help restrain the belligerent suspected drug dealers who went on rampage assaulting the arresting team.
Narrating the circumstances of the incident, a highly placed source told this paper that the wife of the NDEA operations Director was married to a notorious drug dealer in the area before marrying to Mbye Njie. Mrs. Faal’s former husband had a history of drug related crimes—leading to the police arresting him one time with a vehicle filled with marijuana. The said vehicle was confiscated by the state and is currently under the custody of NDEA Command. The former husband has since jumped bail and is believed to be at large, said sources very familiar with his case.
On Monday, NDEA officials raided the house of her former husband, and found a large consignment of drugs. Salma Faal and her brothers were present during the raid. They were caught with a sizeable amount of cannabis sativa, police said.
NDEA Operations Boss Pressured Police
It was during the process of arresting Mrs. Salma Faal and her brothers that they became belligerent, and started attacking the officers, said our source. A backup team later showed up at the scene of the crime, where they arrested the wife of the NDEA operations Director, and some youth. They were briefly booked at the Barra police station, before being released on bail. It was gathered that Salma Faal’s husband Mbye Njie pressured his colleagues in the police command to release the detainees on bail the same day.
While Sergeant Boboucarr Korita is struggling with his life, following the attack he and his colleagues suffered in the hands of Salima Faal and co partners in crime, the NDEA operations Director was concerned about the freedom of his wife and co, said a source familiar with the case.
“ Mbye Njie, being the NDEA operations Director is expected to set high standards. If his wife is engaged in drug trafficking, how can he effectively run the unit. To add insult to injury, he never cared about the welfare of the injured officer. He was busy calling the police command to pressure for the release of the detainees. There are people perishing in jail after been caught with one joint of “Jamba.” Why are these people being treated differently. We are all equal before the law,” said our source.
According to our source, Mbye Njie ordered for the release of the detainees, even though a staffer under his command is languishing in hospital—thanks to the assaul he suffered from Salima Faal and others. An insider at the Barra police station confirmed the story. The insider said Mbye Njie’s actions tantamount to obstruction of justice.
“These people assaulted one of his officers. He should have allowed the investigations to take its natural cause than to be concerned with bail. The constitution stipulates that we are empowered to detain these people for 72 hours, but Mr. Njie used his influence to meddle with the investigations. They all have been granted bail as we speak,” said the police insider.
Mr. Njie himself could not be reached for comments at press time, but a source within the NDEA hierarchy said this case is a test for Ben Jammeh. The source said the least they expected from Mbye Njie is resignation, as the matter at hand bothers on integrity. The source said there is no way Gambians would trust Mbye Njie if his own family is engaged in drug trafficking.
Mbye Njie married Salma Faal, while working in Barra as a drug squad agent. Mrs. Faal and the other accused person were released the same day. It has been gathered that Mr. Njie being drug squad operations Director, he decides who should be granted, or denied bail. He used his position to free the accused persons, said our source.
Gambia’s President Yahya Jammeh has vowed that he would make The Gambia a drug free nation. He warned members of the security forces, including the civilian population to stay away from drugs. He warns that anyone caught trafficking drugs would be mercilessly dealt with.
