The Councillor of Sukuta Ward Sheikh Ibra Faal is in deep trouble, following allegations that he (Mr. Faal) had embezzled President Yahya Jammeh’s rice that was given to him for sale in the tune of D75, 500 dalasi, the Freedom Newspaper can report.  The embattled Councillor spent hours at the NIA’s Western Region office Thursday to shed light on the whereabouts of the missing funds, sources said.

Mr. Faal, was one of the Jammeh rice vendors—tasked with selling the President’s rice, but he told investigators that his customers defaulted in paying him on time as anticipated.  He confessed that he indeed failed to settle the President’s rice consignment that was given to him for sale, which was supposed to be paid off at a given period of time.  However, the Councillor is far behind time in meeting his financial obligation to The Gambian leader, now turned business tycoon.

Appearing before a team of NIA investigators at the Governor’s office in Brikama, Mr. Faal who was bonded by the Brikama Area Council to avoid being jailed on Thursday, was relieved when Council officials told the NIA officials that they were ready to act as his surety until the said funds are accounted for.  The Council, however stated in no uncertain terms that it is not in the position to settle the outstanding rice funds, but yet it was committed to bond the embattled Sukuta Councillor.

The NIA welcomed the Council’s decision to bailout one of its staffers, but on the condition that Mr. Faal must surrender his house’s title deed situated in Bijilo, which Faal did without hesitation. Faal said he is willing to sell part of his house to settle the President’s money.

Faal had earlier told the NIA that some of his constituents took the President’s rice without paying him. He said he has been pursuing the defaulters since last year, but they are not willing to pay him.
