As insecurity grips Gambia’s President Yahya Jammeh, the Gambian leader has effected another changes in the army—with the State Guard Commander Brigadier General Lamin Bojang booted out of the State House, the Freedom Newspaper can report. Mr. Bojang is the latest casualty of Jammeh’s unfinished purging of the army. Gen. Bojang has been moved to the Gambia National Guards, under close surveillance amid distrust between the military and the President. No reason was given for General Bojang’s redeployment, but competent State House sources said the Head of State is “hatching” another plot to get rid of potential officers in the Armed Forces.
According to a news release issued by the President’s office late Friday, Gen. Bojang has been replaced by Chief of Staff Brigadier General Sering Modou Njie, who also doubles as State Guard Commander. Mr. Njie was in charge of the State Guards before his elevation as Chief of Staff.
Highly placed military sources familiar with the matter said both Mr. Njie and Bojang are being secretly watched by personnel of the National Intelligence Agency. Our sources said there is distrust between the President and the officers named herein which warranted the minor shakeup in the military.
“Brigadier General Sering Modou Njie, and his colleague Lamin Bojang must be very lucky if they are not arrested in days to come. The redeployment is just another diversion. There is more to the redeployment. Oga is not out for anything good. You just watch what is going to be their fate. They have to understand that Oga doesn’t trust us and no matter how one is loyal to the establishment, he or she would be victimized just like he did to Lang. I can confirm to you that these people are under investigations. They must be very careful about who they talk to, where they hangout, and socialize. Oga is out for a sinister plot once again,” said a top military source.
According to our source, Gen. Bojang was the commanding officer of the Gambia National Guard, before he was moved to the State House, while Mr. Njie was the commanding officer of the State Guard.
“ These people should watch their back. Even our boss Masaneh Kinteh is not safe at all. Oga said he is setting a trap for them. This is what he confided to us,” said our source.
