The Country!
By Staff Reporter James Jammeh, Banjul
Authorities in The Gambia have banned Senegalese vehicles from transporting fish from the impoverished West African country, to neighboring Senegal, said competent sources. Dozens of Senegalese vehicles loaded with fish inbound for Senegal were stopped by police officers this week, sources said. The police officers said they received orders to stop Senegalese trucks from transporting fish from The Gambia.
According to sources, the recent move left fleets of Senegalese trucks stranded along the border. Authorities in The Gambia initiated the fish cross border transportation ban two weeks ago, sources said. It is not clear whether the decision emanated from President Jammeh, but sources said Senegalese Trucks in the fishing village of Tanji, and elsewhere across the country, were banned from transporting fish from the country.
Our source said police confronted Senegalese truckers at the sea site, and along the border. The source said for the past two weeks, no Senegalese truck had been allowed to collect fish from The Gambia.
