The sudden political decision taken by Omar Amadou Jallow (OJ), to withdraw his candidature from the NADD flag bearer race, is a sign of patriotism and love for one’s country. OJ, has proven his critics wrong today. He had demonstrated that he is not “power drunken” and The Gambia’s future means a lot for him. We expect other NADD executive members to iron out their differences and move on. The Gambia is bigger than Ousainou Darboe, Halifa, OJ, Waa and Halifa. There is need to play by the democratic game and stop the political greed.
It is not yet clear what might have prompted OJ to take such a major political decision. He only says the move was done in the interest of NADD unity. Very assuring statement from OJ. Unity means strength. NADD, is undergoing crucial political evolution and its leadership must be united, if they are truly committed in voting dictator Jammeh out of office.
The announcement made by Lamin Waa Juwara that he wanted to serve as NADD flag bearer, is also sending confusion across the country. We respect Juwara as a committed political figure, but we also expect him to honor his past promises that he was not going to run as NADD flag bearer. Yes, Waa has all rights to contest for the Presidency, if he deems it necessary. But the issue at hand here, is his past political proclamations. We expect our political leaders to go by their promises and not otherwise. The moment politicians started deviating from their promises, voters will doubt their sincerity and political commitment.
Juwara, should be a man of example and not to be carried by the political waves to give up his promise to The Gambian people. We can vividly remember his promise at the hills of the NADD leadership controversy, that he Waa was not going to run as NADD flag bearer in the coming polls. We still expect him to stick to his promise if he want to win the respect of Gambians.
We comprehend that circumstances are dictated by events, but with due respect to the Niamina Dankunku lion, he should not allow his arch political critics to accuse him of double standards. Waa, has been very consistent over the years in terms of political issues. We would be very surprised if he should go ahead with his announcement. While some say the move taken by Waa, was a tactical one, we are still not convinced that he will play with the gallery to the detriment of his political career.
There is a complete U turn on the NADD flag bearer selection. What happened to Assan Musa Camara? Did he joined Darboe and Hamat? We were told that he used to preside over the selection process. Now OJ had taken over. We hope that Mr.Jallow will succeed in bringing sanity into the party and find a lasting solution to the flag bearer issue. We rest our case!!!!
