Dr. Amadou Scattered Janneh, the former Information Minister, has been officially confirmed as a prisoner of conscience after a Nigerian judge sentenced him to life imprisonment on charges of plotting to dislodge the administration of dictator Yahya Jammeh through forceful means. The remaining accused persons were each jailed three years with hard labor by the court.
Families, friends and loved ones wept in court as paramilitary police escorted the naturalized Gambian American citizen to prison. The verdict left the entire nation pondering about the rationale behind such a harsh sentence. Printing a t-shirt advocating for a regime change cost Dr. Janneh his life. The judge said the former political science professor will spend the rest of his life in prison.
Mr. Janneh is the latest guest at Mile Two—fondly called as the Baba Jobe Hotel by the Gambian dictator Yahya Jammeh. He is being held at cell number five at the mile two security wing. Cell number five is a one man cell, without proper ventilation, and sanitation. He must learn to cope with prison life in the Gambia.
The cell in question do not have a toilet. If he wants to defecate, or urinate he must use a bucket stationed in his cell. It’s a tiny cell infested with mosquitoes. There are ninety percent chances of Dr. Janneh being infected with malaria, or other malnutrition diseases. Prisoners are underfed in the Gambia and in most occasions the food taste horrible.
As a result of this, many prisoners are dying. They developed a disease called Beriberi, and within a short period of time the inmates will die. Inmates suffering from Beriberi developed swollen face and body pain.
In cell number five, Dr. Janneh will be entitled to two breaks and the rest he would be subjected to continued lockdown. Each morning he will be released from 8am to 12 midday. And in the afternoon, from 2PM to 330Pm.
On arrival at Mile Two, Dr. Janneh was greeted with a prisoner jumper. Inmates who knew him came to exchange greetings with the former Minister. He was consoled to keep the faith. The other co convicts are being held at the Mile Two main yard.
Meanwhile, Dr. Janneh colleagues at the CCG vehemently condemned his jailing describing it as a mockery to justice. The CCG reassures its supporters and partners about its determination to restore democracy in the Gambia.
