We Need Balance Sheet-Commentary We Need Balance Sheet
By Sarjo Bayang
In society, some people are liabilities. Other people are assets. It counts on how much or less resourceful a person proves to be. To determine how less a liability and how much of an asset various members of the wider society we all are, we need Balance Sheet to ascertain the net worth of each according what we consume and how much we each produce to keep society going. From individual level the interest to measure society's networth can be extended to public and private establishments that exist within the wider socio-political and economic environment known as the state aparatus. This is most essential at a time when Gambians are getting ready to cast votes in deciding who is to be handed the master keys to operate our national economy and the super system of government.
Balance Sheet is generally associated with business life. On wider scale every person needs a Balance Sheet to measure our net worth at regular intervals. The way you check your blood level is the same way you need to check your life worth. As balanced blood level is preferred for healthy life so also is a balanced economic, social, and political order can be preferred for safe and decent society.
To appreciate the need for Balance Sheet we simply recall the instrumental nature of this accounting document. Balance Sheet is more about summarising what an establishment (individual) owns and what is owed to others. What is owned being classified as ASSETS and what is owed as LIABILITIES. In the real business world, it is a tool required to measure the net worth of an establishment at start of business, during a business period, and also preferred at end of business period. Who in this world would not want to measure how much you worth at different stages of life ? While we all prefer to associate with wanting to know how much we worth as individuals, the truth is that only few among us ever bother to pay any attention to how life unfolds. We only care to fill our pockets our racks, our shelves, and our cases. Very few people in life take serious stock of life and a smaller number out of this few ever document at all. Each person is an established entity of different networth. Some people may be recognised for greater gross worth based on their material and financial possession under the eyes of society. When you take a closer look and set out all the liabilities against their assets, an amazing big picture of a negative net worth may be your final account of things.
We are now at a point in time where every Gambian needs to know what the net worth of our little coastal country stands at. There is no better moment than now when election time fast approaches. Let the current government produce a Balance Sheet to let the population know how much we worth as a nation. This can help voters make informed decision after knowing what we worth. It is not enough to boost the image of our economy by colourful false accounts as corrupt governments often do in winning donor support. This time it is the population that wants to what assets and liabilities we bank on as a nation.
On the side of other political parties seeking a mandate, they too are under similar obligation to produce what may be taken as proforma Balance Sheet. Assuming that you are about to inherit a deep drowned economic liability by the end of this year's polls, show the population how you plan to improve the ecnonomy from whatever obtains.
A government, its public servants, ministers, and head of state can either be assets or liabilities depending on what they prove as net worth of their exsitence. It takes public resources to sustain the finances and materials used by those in public positions. Where public office holders including heads of states and cabinet ministers produce more than what it takes to keep them, they can be seen as being resourceful. Where it takes more to sustain them than what they contribute in their roles, they are simply unresourceful and better classified as liabilities. In deciding who and which political grouping is to handle the master key of our financial and material resources, we need a Balance Sheet to determine what we worth in the hands of such people. If the current government fails to produce a Balance Sheet for the population to debate over before elections, then they do not worth a vote. This is different from a colourful Annual Budget which is nothing but a bunch of spring flowers for decorations. Let us as a nation demand a Balance Sheet to determine the net worth of not just our super system but also the responsible custodians of our nation's master key that operates both the economy and the political super system. Without a Balance Sheet we run the risk of living a life and not checking our blood levels at required intervals. Gambia as a nation cannot be trusted in the hands of people who only seek to enrich themselves and will not let us know what our net worth is. We Need Balance.
