Gambian police have arrested the 26-year-old wife of a missing British pensioner after finding a body.William West, 76, from Hastings, East Sussex, disappeared while on holiday with his wife Kate in the West African country two weeks ago. He has not been seen since the couple went on a day trip to Senegal on July 3.A spokeswoman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: "We are aware of the disappearance and possible death of a British national."The Gambian police informed us a body was found yesterday, which they believe may be Mr West. Formal identification will be carried out and we await the results. Next of kin have been notified and we have offered consular support.

"The Gambian police have made one arrest in connection with their investigation. The arrest is of his wife."

Sussex Police said three men were also helping the Gambian authorities with their inquiries.

Mrs West, who is believed to be Irish according to the FCO, returned to West Africa within the last week to try to find her husband.

She flew there with a close family friend to begin the search and liaise directly with Gambian and Senegalese police.

Mr West was last seen going to buy something from a shop when the couple went on a day trip to neighbouring Senegal and he did not return.

POLICE in Gambia have arrested the 26-year-old wife of a missing British pensioner after discovering a body.

William West, 76, from Hastings, East Sussex, disappeared two weeks ago while on holiday with his wife in the West African country, where they own a house.

He has not been seen since the couple took a day shopping trip to neighbouring Senegal on July 3.

Mr West never returned.

A spokeswoman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: “We are aware of the disappearance and possible death of a British national.

“The Gambian police informed us a body was found yesterday, which they believe may be Mr West. 

“Formal identification will be carried out and we await the results. Next of kin have been notified and we have offered consular support.

“The Gambian police have made one arrest in connection with their
investigation. The arrest is of his wife.”
