The 26-year-old wife of an East Sussex man who went missing in
Africa has been charged with his murder after his burnt remains were
discovered in The Gambia.
William West, 76, of St Helen's Park in Hastings, had
been staying with his wife Kate at their beachside holiday home in the
village of Sanyang.
He was reported missing on 3 July while on a day trip to neighbouring Senegal.
Gambian police said his Ghanaian-born wife had led officers to his body. A man is being questioned.
Meanwhile, here is another piece about the said body that was found in the Gambian soils. Please read on...
Body found in Gambia
POLICE believe they have found the body of missing Hastings pensioner William West.
The
76-year-old of St Helen's Park Road disappeared under a shroud of
mystery while staying at with his 26-year-old wife at their holiday
home in Gambia.
The pair had been enjoying a month long break when
Mr West went missing on July 3 after going into a shop to buy some
cigars during a day trip to neighbouring Senegal.
Instead of alerting Gambian police, Mr West's wife, Kate West, returned to England before she reported her husband as missing.
Despite
a police appeal for help, Mrs West refused to talk to press - fuelling
speculation she was somehow involved in the disappearance.
Mrs West
returned to West Africa last week with family friend David Jenkins to
register Mr West as officially missing and to try to find him.
This
mornings gruesome discovery could spell the end of the search -
although the mystery of what happened to the pensioner and why is
surely just beginning.
The body found earlier today (Friday July 21)
has not yet been officially identified and police are remaining tight
lipped over the identity of four people who are helping authorities
abroad with their inquiries.
They are three men and one woman - a 26-year-old.
Sussex
police, who have officers helping with the investigation, would not
confirm the woman was Kate West but it is believed the matching ages is
not merely a coincidence.
Jane Batchelor, spokesman for East Sussex
Police, said: "We are receiving information from our counterparts in
the Gambia very slowly so cannot confirm a lot at this stage.
"All we can say is that there has been a body found and that four people, including a 26-year-old woman, are helping police."
