UDP/NRP Presidential Flag bearer Darboe accuses gov't of "harassment and provocation"-As VOA interview him!!! By Pa Nderry M'Bai
Presidential
flag bearer for the UDP/NRP alliance Ousainou Darboe, has accuses the
Gambian government of "harassment and provocation" following attempts
by the regime to link him with concealment of arms and hard drugs.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with the Voice of America's James Butty
Daybreak Africa host and presenter,Darboe charged that the recent raid
on his offices by the country's anti narcotic unit was "politically
motivated." Darboe, a twice Presidential aspirant says the government
was hell bent on embarrassing him by trying link him with such shady
deals.
Narrating how the police stormed into his office, Darboe
says the drug squad agents told him that they got an information that
arms and drugs were concealed into his office. "I told them that they
are free to search the office. They opened drawers and books. They
discovered nothing. I'm not into crime. I'm not in possession of drugs
or arms.At the end of the search, I volunteered that they go and search
two of my home."said Darboe. Such an invitation was not honoured by the searching drug officials. They only searched the politician's office and left.
When asked why drug squad agents
should conduct a search on him, Darboe retorted that such a move was
purely intended to smear his image as a political leader." They want to
embarrass, harass me. This is the second time that they are searching
my office.Through out my practice, I kept away from representing people
charged with drug trafficking, murder or rape. Rape is violence against
women and I decided not to represent people charged with rape."Darboe
maintains.
The UDP leader believes that the government was trailing him
because of his increasing popularity in the West Africa country. Darboe
says his party being the biggest opposition party in The Gambia, the
regime whose support base is declining resorts to such smear campaign
against his personality.
"The Gambian government sees me as a murderer and drug trafficker. They see me as a threat."Darboe told VOA.
According
to Darboe both raids on his office comes at a time when the country was
about to go to the polls. Darboe denied concealing arms or drugs into
his office. He describes the charges as bogus and politically motivated.
On
what line of action he was going to take against the government for
exposing him into such trial and tribulations, Darboe intimated that he
has consulted his lawyer to take up the issue. Darboe says the matter
was being handled by his lawyer.
