Following Horomsi's piece on Jammeh's Marabouts-Journalist PK Jarju reacts!!!
By Journalist PK Jarju
Hello Pa
Reaction!
I wish to react to your today's lead story captioned "Jammeh's
Marabout trying to make Darboe to concede defeat come September-Drug
Squad officials unveil "Jujus,Charms" dropped!!!". To be honest with
you as a friend, i found the story to be flattering. I couldn't stop
myself laughing all day long.
As we are in the 21st century, there is
noway a marabout of juju can influence the outcome of any election.
Free and fair elections only reflects the will of the people.
As a journalist who have covered the
previous elections, am of the firm believe tthat Jammeh is going to
sweep the polls again with a wider margin. Though, I disagree with some
of of his policies and actions especially when it comes to freedom of expression, Jammeh's chances of winning the election are increasing
everyday due to numerous socio-economic developments he has undertaken.
Lets remember that as poor and developing
country, a greater majority of the Gambian population shows leadership
as the will of Allah and will continue to cast their votes to any
incumbent is in power regardless of his education, manifesto. Many of
the Gambian electorates are of the of the believe that voting against
an incumbent is going against the will of Allah.
Marabouts do play any significant role in
any election. If they do then, Abdou Diouf, would never have been
defeated in the last Senegalese polls. Then Jawara would never have
been flush out of power on July 22.
Darboe's chances of winning this year's
election are very slim. He stood a better chance in 2001 which he
woefully failed to capitalised on. In fact, his percentage was far
lower than what the UDP registered in the 1996 elections. Lets remember
that some of the votes the UDP got were from the NCP which has now
joined the APRC. Lets remember that the UDP as of 2001, does not have
any political stronghold in the country. Its former strongholds like
the Baddibus, Kiangs, and the Jarras have all been taken by Jammeh and
his APRC. To back my assertion, see the results of the 2001 general
elections, which Darboe himself declared as free and fair and reflected
on the will of the masses.
While opposition leaders occupied their
precious time trying to form an alliance, the APRC under its organised
local institutions have been organising countrywide sensitisation and
rallies thereby wooing the support of many opposition supporters.
Jammeh is playing his political cards very
well and will continue to strengthen his support across the Gambian
masses. The UDP despite forming an alliance with NRP will not make any
significant gain in the elections. Because, the NRP only has one
stronghold ie Upper Saloum which it has lost to the APRC. Secondly by
joining the UDP, Hamat Bah has shot himself on the foot because many
of his party's supporters have withdrew their support for him.
I could go on and on, but due to limited
time, I say chi jaama. May Allah continue to shower Love and blessings
to The Gambia. Amen.
I say thank you to the Freedom Newspaper and
Pa Nderry M'bai for the effort in providing many Gambians the opportunity
to express themselves freely. God bless you brother.
