Putting sense into PK Jarju's Head-Commentary!!!
Putting sense into PK Jarju's Head By Yankuba Jambang-Associate Editor It's
very unfortunate and sad to read such a myopic commentary from a
person who calls himself a journalist. PK, I believe, just started
writing without thinking. Writing is a powerful way of communicating
and it's always preceded by what is called THINKING. You have to think
before putting pen on paper and by doing so, you will be able to have a
subject matter or topic of whatever literary work you want to do. So, I
am writing this piece because I want to put some senses into PK's head
by analyzing his commentary which, I believe, is full of contradictions
that could be noticed by a grade 9 student! Here we go: PK
writes:"As a journalist who have covered the previous elections, am of
the firm believe that Jammeh is going to sweep the polls again with a
wider margin. Though, I disagree with some of his policies and actions
especially when it comes to freedom of expression..." PK shamelessly and ignorantly went further to say this: "Free and fair elections only reflects the will of the people". Well,
I believe PK is either insane or does not quite understand English.
This is because when you [PK] believe that Jammeh's government
suppresses freedom of expression, then how can that same regime hold free and fair elections?
What he fails to understand is that freedom of expression and free and
fair elections are inseparable. Freedom of expression and or
speech is a basic tenet of any democracy. If indeed PK covered the 2001 presidential election as I did for Citizen FM
radio, then he is either lying willingly to support an unprecedented
brutal dictatorship or he is incurably insane to call that election
free and fair. Ousainou Darboe, I believe, conceded defeat for two
reasons; to avoid chaos and mayhem that could have resulted in some
innocent civilian deaths if he had declared the elections unfair. He
may also have conceded defeat for fear of his on live. We have seen
Jammeh rolling tanks and armored trucks during his campaigns. We have
seen soldiers beating opposition supporters etc. These were enough
intimidation's to scare potential opposition voters. We have
seen unqualified non-Gambians with voter's cards whose names were
not on the original voters list prepared by the IEC. Where were you
journalist PK? If
Jammeh believed he was going to win the elections, he would have agreed
to "on the spot counting" which helped Senegal and other African
countries peacefully change their governments. And if he still believes
he has the support of the majority of Gambians he would not have
changed the constitution which requires a candidate to win 51 percent
of the votes to become president. But because he lacks support of
Gambians who are fed up with his brutish behavior, he forced the rubber
stamp parliament to amend the electoral clause in the constitution from
"51 percent" to "simple majority". It's because he's got no support in
the country hence the massive registration of illegal aliens in the
Gambia.
PK, you have insulted Gambians by stating: "...a greater majority of Gambian population shows leadership as the will of Allah and will continue to cast their votes to any incumbent who is in power regardless of his education or manifesto." PK
you honestly believe that Gambians including your father could be so
irresponsible to vote anyone into office of the president at will even
if the person has nothing to offer? You mean The Gambia that first held
elections in 1951 is still in a dogmatic era of political ignorance and
is so irresponsible to happily ask anyone to occupy this post for
nothing. True Journalists don't subscribe to such stereotype, PK. I am
disappointed to know that there are such Gambians who see these polar
extreme worst conditions and pretend that things are OK with Gambians.
