my remarks that Jammeh will win the next election was not based on any tribal line-PK Jarju By Journalist PK Jarju Reaction
Editor,
It is true that Yankuba and I both came from the same area (Kafuta
and Sohm) and have been childhood friends, and from different tribes,
I want to make it catergorically clear that my remarks that Jammeh
will win the next election was not based on any tribal line.
Everyone who knows me well, will bear me witness that am not
tribal blinded in my work as a journalists. All what I am renowned for
is writing nothing but the truth. I have never and will never be a
tribalist because most of my friends like Yankuba himself are from
different tribes.
I want to make it clear to the whole Gambian population that in
line with principles of my noble profession, I have never supported any
political party. For me, being partisan would greatly affect my
work. Let me again state that I have got friends in almost all the
political parties in the country. For instance, Hamat Bah, Shyngle
Nyassi and Omar Jallow are all my best friends but our friendship is
based on who we are and not what we are.
As far as am concern, for us to attain our development strides, we
have to put aside our tribal differences and work together as one big
family. The Gambia today does not need tribalism.
It is very unfair for Yanks to say that the APRC has not achieved
any thing for The Gambia. Let me please remind my dear friend that the
junior secondary school he attended in his native Kafuta was built my
the APRC. That the telephone lines in Kafuta were installed by the
APRC. That the road from Mandina-ba that goes through Kafuta to Soma is
being constructed by the APRC. That thanks to the APRC the people of
Kafuta will no longer need to travel far to Brikama or Sibanor for
medical attention.
Although the only good thing Yanks would wish to Jammeh is death,
yet he should be fair enough to give him his due. Even Jammeh's
political opponents have on numerous occasions recognised his some of
the projects he has already accomplished.
Am not saying that Jammeh is Saint. Like any other African leader,
Jammeh has made some mistakes over the past years, which he himself has
admitted. But despite those mistakes, yet the APRC has made some gains
in the area of education, communication and health which has improved
the lives of Gambians.
I will further state that the APRC is going to win this year's
election because of its organised grassroot structures. Instead of
relaxing after sweeping the 2001 polls, the APRC has continued to tour
the country which are marred by mass defection of UDP supporters.
What modalities has the opposition including the UDP put in place
to win this year's polls? Even Yanks himself has admitted his
frustration to the failure of the opposition for a strong coalition.
Lets us remember that The Gambia is our country and we should use
our different political ideologists to make it a better place for all.
Sitting in our warm houses and writing Jammeh this or Jammeh that will
never take us foward.
And until we put aside our tribal differences we shall continue to
waste our time writing millions of articles and books which will
continue to fall in deaf years.
Lets be proud of our country, ourselves and work together like one family. Until then, chi jaama.
