Breaking News:President Jammeh summons security Chiefs, following the "so called" escape of Major Bajinka!!!
Colonel Tamba, Singhateh, Jatta, Sonko and others threatened with
imprisonment, as Jammeh issues ultimatum for Banjinka to be produced
"dead or alive." By Staff Writer Karafa BadjieThe
head of Gambia's armed Forces Colonel Lang Tombong Tambong, his deputy
Peter Singhateh, Interior Minister Baboucarr Jatta, IGP Ousman Sonko
and other heads of security chiefs in the West African country were
recently summoned to the state house in Banjul, where President Yahya
Jammeh reportedly threatened to send them to prisons if they fail to
furnish him with a comprehensive report about what the President
called the "so called escape" of fugitive army major Kalipha Bajinka,
well placed state house sources hinted today. Sources quoted the
Gambian leader as saying that Bajinka never escaped as he was "helped
to leave the country" by border patrol security forces.

Jammeh
according to sources presided the national security meeting, in which
he told security chiefs that he will not hesitate to send them to jail
if they are found wanting in their duties. Jammeh was said to have
told security chiefs to discharge their duties as expected. Frowning
Jammeh said Bajinka could not have escaped if not aided and abetted by
border guards posted along the Gambia/Senegal border with the help of some
security chiefs. Both Lang Tombong and Peter Singhateh were said to
have denied being a party to Bajinaka's escape. They blamed the NIA and
some security agencies for being responsible for Bajinka's escape.
Despite their attempts to exonerate themselves from any wrong doing,
Jammeh was quoted as saying that whoever is linked to the said
conspiracy to set Bajinka free will pay for the price. He was said to
have shouted at the security chiefs accusing them of trying to
compromise national security matters. A top military official
at the state house who spoke to the Freedom Newspaper on condition of
anonymity says Major Bajinka was talking to Lang Tombong Tamba, before
his return from his overseas studies. The Military official said
Bajinka was assured of his safety upon his return by the army chief
Lang Tombong Tamba, only to be pursued by armed security men. The
Freedom Newspaper gathered that Bajinka's wife visited Lang Tombong
Tamba to ascertain reports whether her husband was really wanted by the
state. Tamba who was not keen at talking to Bajinka on the phone
fearing being monitored by state hired phone conversation monitors was
said to have been more comfortable talking to Bajinka through his
wife.Sources said Bajinka's wife had face to face conversation with
Tamba. Colonel Tamba widely known for his humility was said to be
Bajinka's close friend. Their friendship dates back in the days of
their Gendamerie when they were both junior officers. Major Bajinka who
denied having hands into the March alleged coup attempt against
President Jammeh's government was said to have been assured by some of
his close friends at the GAF head head quarters including Lang Tombong
Tamba that it was safe for him to return. Tamba was said to have
rubbishes news reports that Bajinka was wanted. He was quoted as saying
that Bajinka was not on their wanted list, but what suprises many
was Tamba's repeated attempts to snub Bajinka upon his return from Nigeria.
He was said to have turned off his cellular phone, which sent signals
to the major that some unusual thing was about to befall him.
Our state house military official source said there is a big rift in
the military, as Jammeh is doubting the loyalty of some of the army
officials he recently promoted. The source hinted that the President
entertained the belief that there are "still some ruminants of
coupists" surrounding him. Our source hinted that the state house
meeting has sent panic in the military top brass, as Jammeh was said to
have told them in no uncertain terms that he was aware of what the
President called "the ongoing sabotage" within the force. The
Freedom Newspaper in recent times published series of pieces regarding
an arrest warrant which was issued by the state to arrest Banjinka.
Mr.Bajinka was said to have been wanted in connection with the alleged
March abortive coup. Our source hinted that some heads are bound to
roll in days to come, as Jammeh gave Tamba, Singhateh and others to
produce Major Bajinka alive or dead. It is gathered that a team of
government secret agents recently traveled to Dakar and Casamance with
the aim of trailing Bajinka. The Department of State for Foreign Affairs
was reported to have launched an appeal to the Senegalese government to
hand over Bajinka and other suspected coup suspects if found in their
territory. Sources hinted that the mission of the Gambia's security
agents in Dakar was to ascertain reports regarding Bajinka's presence
in that country. Some army officers led by Peter Singhateh are said to
be patrolling the border villages to track down the army fugitive. Such
a move was intended to meet Jammeh's ultimatum to produce Bajinka. What is evident though is that the country's security agencies are divided. While President Jammeh is seeking for a third term in office reelection, he is confronted by growing insecurity.
