An official of Africell, Gambia’s privately owned cell phone company said they were contacted by the state to produce the phone records of the detained Kanifing Imam Baba Leigh, who was recently tortured to coma by President Yahya Jammeh’s assassin team. The official said Africell has since provided Leigh’s phone records to the NIA. The state is trying to investigate Baba Leigh’s phone contacts both at home and abroad. They want to know the people Imam Leigh has been talking with for the past couple of months.
The Africell official who spoke to our source said some agents of the NIA came into their head office and requested to access Baba Leigh’s phone records. After they were furnished with Leigh’s phone records, the NIA agents left, our source said.
Reports have it that Baba Leigh is being linked to diasporan Gambians, who are bracing up to attend an international meeting in Dakar, Senegal sometime in the new year. Leigh’s name was allegedly associated with the Dakar meeting, which angered the Kanilai dictator. Leigh, is likely to be charged with subversive activities, a source hinted.
