DUGA CONDEMNS BABA LEIGH’S DETENTION!
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The Democratic Union of Gambian Activists – DUGA – USA strongly condemns the resurgence of Jammeh’s instrument of intimidation; the unlawful arrest and indefinite detention of Gambians on trumped up charges. We vigorously condemn the recent arrest and detention of Amie Bensouda and Imam Baba Leigh and equally demand for the immediate and unconditional release of Imam Baba Leigh including an end to all forms of harassments.
Subsequent to the August 24, 2012 mass executions and the concerted international outrage against the Jammeh regime, an uninformed public opinion emerged, implying that, we have weighed tremendous pressure on Jammeh, consequently forcing him to ease his grip of tyranny. Big mistake! This uninformed public opinion got shattered with the recent arrest of Imam Baba Leigh, Amie Bensouda and other notable journalists. Just four months after the genocide, Jammeh revisits his trademark: unlawful arrests, indefinite detentions and release with conditions hung around the necks of his victims. Death and disappearance remains to be his ultimate trademark.
With all delusions and illusions aside, there will be more frequent and severe abrogation of our democratic rights by the AFPRC – APRC regime as long as we remain disjointed, dismembered and fragmented. “If you want to go anywhere quickly, go alone; if you want to go far, go together”.
Tyranny and tyrants know no bounds of reason. Therefore, it is left to the victims of a tyrant to take command of reason and the necessity to unite against tyranny to its logical conclusion. We must not allow Jammeh to survive this catastrophe!
