‘THERE ARE MOVES TO SECURE
BABA LEIGH’S RELEASE, BUT THIS IS A TELEPHONE CONVERSATION,’IMAM KAH TELLS ME
The Imam Ratib of Banjul Cherno Kah
says they are making behind the scene moves to secure Baba Leigh’s release from custody. “ This is a telephone conversation. We are on it. There are moves to secure his release. People should stop speculating,” the Banjul Imam said. “I cannot comment further on this matter. That’s all I can tell you.”
Imam Kah was speaking with me on the phone on Tuesday. The Imam was very economical with his statements, when confronted with questions in regards to the religious leader’s silence over Baba’s Leigh’s arrest.
I placed two phone calls to speak to the Imam. But the Imam hung up the phone on me, when I grilled him on the plight of Baba Leigh. He said it was wrong for anyone to imply that Gambian Imams are insensitive. He refused to answer my questions. He briefly spoke and hung the phone. Imam Kah blamed some unnamed folks of spreading false information and hate against the Muslim leadership in the Gambia.
I tried for the third time to reach Imam Kah on the phone, but he seemingly ignored my phone call. The Imam would not allow me in my two previous phone calls to engage him into “an adult conversation.” He was worried as to whether someone was “listening to his phone conversation” by saying “this is a telephone conversation. He immediately cut me short by prematurely terminating our conversation.
