Dear Editor,
It is sad that people are still being detained following the government
clampdown on
peoples whose names were published in the Daily Observer for allegedly
supplying damaging information to a US-based online publication, Freedom
Newspaper.
It is sad that this even took place but what has to be address is did we as
a nation manage our response to this crackdown well? I would say No.
There is no doubt in my mind that they (Government paid agents) hacked into
the system, what action are we taking to bring the hackers to book; we are
all waiting on that. I think there are laws on that and we must follow it
and get to its logical conclusion.
Those who were arrested were not only Journalist but other subscribers; they
are still made to report weekly, we have not been able to come out with a
full list of those arrested. I can tell you with doubt that one Lamin Bojang
of Farafenni is still being detained and being the sole bread winner of the
family his father has been taken ill.
Whereas I will blame the journalist for writing as if only journalist were
being detained, I equally blame us too for coming out of detention and
refusing to tell the public the beatings received. I met one of guys from
Keneba; he just said to me that whatever has happen to him he leaves all to
Allah.
As nation we all act with short memory, all these atrocities should be
documented and should remain some as logo for a website.
Please editor, we must act now. The issue of the allege escapes said to have
killed is no small case, don’t they have family member who can go to court
to as the government for a proof. Please you can say no.

Rejoinder : Mr. non grey hair critic got it all wrong
Mr. Darboe,
The grey hair critic is Mathew K Jallow, and i am glad you didn't wait
for your name to be mentioned to react to the story. Having said this,
allow me to rectify you in your piece that i Insulted one Pa Kalifa
Sanyang's parents. This is totally unfounded, and i am sure you are
mistaken me for Yorro Jallow, of the Independent. After you erase my
name from your black book, now we come down to a dialogue that will not
be uttered with biasness.
The second rectification in your arguement is mentioning "distrust"
against Darboe, which is not seen anywhere in my piece, though you may
be right that history have me in records for being an arch critic of
this lawyer guy, who i belief have done a lot for Gambians, but his
pulling out of NADD, and some of his public comments will follow him
everywhere.
You spoke the truth that my candidate of choice would have been Halifa
Sallah, but should Darboe be chosen to lead NADD, nothing stops me from
giving him all the support i can, just like any other person.I also
want you take rectification that NADD is still as vibrant as it was
from the day that all signed the MOU. Infact, the latest survey of the
polls shows NADD is leading by twenty percent, though this was just a
tiny bit observation in the Sierrekunda area. There are a lot
deflectors from both the APRC and UDP/NRP, all joining NADD. Infact,
NADD members are working on a grand party marking the entry to the
Gambian statehouse, come september 2006.
Now, back to my piece, you seem to have missed the signal i was sending
to the oppositions. Lets agree that one person cannot do this job
perfect. This is why we need unity among the opposition to get rid of
tyranny. In doing this, one cannot impose him or herself on us, rather
one would need to negotiate in good faith. This is one quality of a
leader. In order to avoid future problems, the rules that will govern
any unity must be well defined, and equality of member parties is a
fundamental tool in winning the hearts of the masses. The term limit
for the presidency as the MOU dictates is five years, and i am sure you
are not telling me that Darboe want to be President for thirty years,
then that will defeat the purpose of struggling to rescue Gambians. The
problem in Africa, when presidents stay longer than a certain period,
it gives birth to coups and counter coups, and you can see that's where
the Gambia is now. Every one should be pushing so hard for unity,
including you, if you are telling us that Darboe is your parent.
The unity that people are calling for is to make sure that the
opposition come together to get rid of Jammeh.
Now, coming down to my professor as you rightly put Halifa, he deserves
all our love and moral support. From the consistency and efforts he
demonstrated so far, the man is a bard. Halifa, being a bard doesn't in
any way reduce any credit that Darboe achieved in his life. We should
be proud of him, and enjoy this gift from God while he is alive with
us.
By the way, since you don't know who i am , i would have love to share
with you discussions that i had with Darboe which is all in tapes. By
the fragile nature of the current opposition crisis, i bet to hold my
horses, and see if they will unite before the nominations, to send only
one candidate against Jammeh. This in all respect was my piece.
With regards to your mention of Freedom, count me among the pillars. I
am a long time admirer of the Independent and its owners, and i wish
and pray that they come back to operations soon. As we engage in a
dialogue in this newspaper, you will find me to be humble and
respecful. I will also advice you to go back and read the piece again,
and see if that makes a difference after knowing with certainty now i
never insulted your friend's parents.
Yours in the Struggle,
Yero Gainako Jallow (Dalton)
