SENEGAL: Journalist imprisoned in defamation case-CPJ Laments!!! Wednesday, July 05, 2006 (252 reads)
SENEGAL: Journalist imprisoned in defamation case
New York, July 5, 2006—The
Committee to Protect Journalists condemns the arrest and imprisonment
on June 29 of Moustapha Sow, a Senegalese journalist who was convicted
in February of defaming a local businessman. An arrest warrant was
issued in February but carried out only last week, local sources told
CPJ.“It is disturbing that a journalist is
being imprisoned almost two years after President Abdoulaye Wade
promised to decriminalize press offenses,” said Joel Simon, executive
director of CPJ. “The existence of criminal defamation laws belies
Senegal’s claims to be a leader in press freedom in Africa.”

Dr.Manneh joins the "Sinking APRC"?-No this was not the Dr.Manneh we used to know in Raleigh NC-A big time Jammeh critic....
 We
are yet to recover from the rude shock we suffered when news emerged
some weeks ago about Dr. Momodou SK Manneh of all Dr.Manneh joining the sinking
Ruling APRC boat. Dr.Manneh was with us here in the United States. A
very religious and God fearing man has joined a murderous regime, which
destroyed the fabric of society in The Gambia. We still cannot fathom
the circumstances that might have compelled our former friend to team
up with the APRC at this hour. Dr.Manneh never hide his opposition to
Jammeh and his dictatorial policies. This was manifested by his
commitment to travel to Banjul in the last election to team up with the
main opposition UDP to oust Jammeh. The same Dr. Manneh was detained by
the NIA because of his brevity to pick on the dictatorship.

The 2006 Elections will serve as a "Litmus Test for The Gambia"-says Journalist Modou Thomas-As he explains how Radio One FM was set on Fire and the obituary letters announced on Radio Gambia about his demise!!!
By Staff Writer
Former
Radio one FM manager, head of news and current Affairs, Modou Thomas
believes that the country's August 2006, Presidential elections will
serve as what he calls a "litmus test" for the impoverished West
African country. Mr.Thomas who was the anchor man of the Radio One
popular show called the Sunday News Hour expresses the need for
Gambians to respect the verdict of the people at the end of the said
upcoming elections. Thomas, who received media training in Ghana and
also a former active member of Gambia's Health Journalist Association
was declared dead three times by unknown agents who in some occasions
sent letters of obituary to the Government controlled radio, Radio
Gambia announcing his untimely death. According to the former Radio One
FM manager his family were trumatised by the said obituary letters,
which attracted a huge gathering at his SerreKunda Home, who came to
sympathize with his family. Now residing in the US State of North
Carolina, Raleigh, Thomas explained to the Freedom Newspaper, about the
Radio One FM arson attack, which led to the fatal injury of the Station
proprietor George Christensen and a local Security Guard who was on
duty on the day in question. Few days before the attackers emerged at
the Radio Station, Thomas said they received a letter, which hinted
about the said attack on their Radio. The letter according to him was
handed to the Inspector General of Police and former Army Chief of
Staff Baboucarr Jatta prior to the burning down of Radio One FM. In an
exclusive interview Thomas, who recently got married talked about
missing the Gambia, the need for respecting people's privacies, and a
host of others. Below is the full text of the interview. Please read on....

freedom."In March 2006, Dupont, who has been covering events in the DRC for
several years, was the subject of a vicious protest letter from Press
and Information Minister, Henri Mova Sakanyi, who compared RFI

PANORAMA with 'Bulfaaleh'-President Jammeh's secret meeting in pictures, tapes will come next. Tuesday, July 04, 2006 (860 reads)
There are facts, there is fiction-voices and pictures are oral and documentary evidence... There
is no harm in any leader or country working on defending its
interest. However,In our case here in Banjul, the harm is when this
defense turns against us in days to come.During
the AU summit I was able to talk so many people on the ground. I infact
had more chats with delegates from Venezuela than other places. My
agenda was not only bent on digging something against President Jammeh
in person. My agenda was to defend the interest of my country. I really
had an open mind in this case. 'Bulfaaleh' would never stop anything
that is meant to help pur people from arriving here,be it from Iran or
Venezuela. All I am after is the development of The Gambia our
homeland. Sorry though,I was drawn back to the old 'fight' as I kept on
digging deeper and deeper I came to realise that truely speaking going
against President Jammeh is a national duty. This AU Summit was so
useful for people like me. I learned far more about President Jammeh
than anytime before.

NO AFRICAN LEFT BEHIND-FACT"-AU BANJUL SUMMIT EXTREME FAILURE! Sunday, July 02, 2006 (435 reads)
By one of our Political Analyst. "No African Left Behind Fact" at least we can borrow this rhyming term from President George Bush's "No Child Left Behind Act".
However in Africa we cannot simply use the word child for now because
it is children and adults who are facing the wrath of despots, bad
governance, embezzlement at the farthest plus a long list of
other rotten elements within. Not all African leaders are part of this
decadence, there are good ones who have earned the gold medals of
democracy. Certainly this reminds us of the old English adage..."One rotten potatoe spoils the bag!" How
about if there is more than one rotten potato in the bag? Africa's case
is a very sad one. It is sad because its sons and daughters are
increasing the line of stigmas along the path. Slavery is
gone,Colonialism is gone but we still have serial rapists within this
huge continent.
