Gambia - Annual report 2006

For several years, Reporters Without Borders has been trying unsuccessfully to alert international opinion to the state of press freedom in the Gambia of President Yahya Jammeh. Neither the African Union, nor the United States or the UK appear to have taken seriously the agonised appeals from journalists in this small English-speaking country surrounded by Senegal. As a result, the situation worsens year by year.

THE AU, UN AND WORLD LEADERS SHOULD COME TO GAMBIA'S AID. JAMMEH IS A THREAT TO WORLD PEACE. IT IS TIME TO LISTEN TO THE CALLS MADE BY THE REPORTERS WITHOUT BORDERS, INCLUDING THIS VERY PAPER ON GAMBIA'S PLIGHT.

Though Jammeh abuses the political gentle nature of Gambians, it is still the people of Gambia who bear the responsibility for cultivating Jammeh. Politics has been associated with economic gains and a mode of socialization. The few who consider themselves wiser than the rest of society play it to suit their selfish ungracious desires. It all began when Gambians thought it was politics as usual at a time Jammeh with his fist of deception baffled the course of history. He made lot of people believe in what he was not thinking about. While he was thinking of how to turn everything up-side-down for everybody, those who stood by him thought he was the man to worth their support.

JAMMEH LIVING LARGE-BUT WILL SOON GO

The Managing Editor of the Banjul based Independent Newspaper, Alagi Yorro Jallow, will served as special guest speaker to  the New York Based Amnesty International world press freedom day celebrations scheduled for  May 4^th. Mr. Jallow a veteran journalist, who suffered all kinds of persecution under Jammeh’s rule is expected to deliver a master piece speech at the New York forum. 16th World Press Freedom Day

Reporters Without Borders has been working daily for more than 20 years to defend press freedom around the world. It will mark World Press Freedom Day on 3 May to remind people that democracy suffers every time the right to inform the public and to be informed is undermined in any country.

There is no Gambian who dislikes seeing investors surge towards home, however not when we have a president who is a share holder in all major companies. President Jammeh in 2004 openly declared that he owns YDE! Why he was not impeached for this maybe beyond comprehension for democrats, of course it is normal in The Gambia today. He could not stop himself from committing suicide politically, therefore decided to be so shameless before the public. He covered his shame by pretending to be so angry with Baba Jobe. This means nothing to the Gambian farmers who are at the receiving end. Talking about Baba Jobe is not what the Gambian farmers want to hear.
