Fear Grip Suspected Gambian Witches!!!!
….As Jammeh Ordered For The Arrest Of Witches
By Musa Jobe, Our West Africa Bureau Chief, In Dakar.
Despite the lull in the apparent state-sponsored hunt for witches and wizards in The Gambia, communities across the land are currently living in heightened fear of being raided by a band of witch-doctors and ruling party supporters rented by the President to purge the West African country of the underworld of sorcerers. Anxiety and worry continue to grip suspected witches. The President Yahya Jammeh has hired Guinean witch doctors, who are working in tandem with members of the armed forces to arrest suspected witches in the country. In some occasions, they forced people to drink local charms, which left many here badly sick. Police sources said many suspected witches suffered various degrees of pain, as a result of the forced medication given to them by the Guinea witch doctors.

Opposition Leader Says Gambia a Police State as country Observes 44th Independence Anniversary

By James Butty
Washington, DC
18 February 2009
The Gambia, Africa's smallest country, celebrates 44 years of independence from British colonial rule Wednesday. After surviving an earlier attempted coup in 1981, founding father Sir Dawda Jawara was overthrown in 1994 by Lieutenant Yahya Jammeh. In an editorial, the government-run Daily Observer newspaper says independence brought an end to colonial domination. But opposition leader Ousainu Darbo told VOA that while Gambians should celebrate their freedom from colonial rule, their country under Yahya Jammeh remains a virtual police state. "Gambians have reason to celebrate independence on Wednesday, 18 February because if for nothing, it remains the day that we severed our connection with the British and took charge of the running of the affairs of The Gambia by ourselves. It is also a day on which every Gambian should rededicate himself to ensuring that this is taking to higher heights," he said.

Many died of starvation-Scales Wednesday, February 18, 2009 (414 reads)
Many died of starvation-Scales
Dear Mr.Editor,
It saddens me, whenever I hear Africans recall colonialism with such dejection, as though it remains the only cause of the castration of The African's poor condition. This remains entirely in the ownership of African's. You don't hear The Americans or the Canadians or The Australians or The Indians speaking in such distress. Theirs is a history of struggle and self reliance fought out of bondage to an economic and overwhelming social victory. Somehow, The African grasped Independence as a means to riches that was visited on only a fortunate few. Some would say that tribalism is the route cause of African intransigence to prosperity. Yet America was colonised by many nationalities that shared a common bond through struggle and in some part...its civil war. Is it right that African's propagate history as its "achilles heel" to progress, or is the African so despairing that he cannot or will not face up to her own truth.
