Independent Newspaper Under Armed Guard!

Independent Under Armed Guard

The compound that used to house the once popular bi-weekly Independent
newspaper is now literally turned to a security base and a forest.
The Independent newspaper was very vocal about the Jammeh administration but
the paper was closed down following the March 21 abortive military coup when
two of its staff, editor Musa Saidykhan and general manager, Madi Ceesay,
were picked up and detained at the NIA Headquarters  in Banjul for months.
Though, the government of The Gambia was yet to give reason(s) as to why The
Independent was  placed under armed siege and subsequently closed down by
the authorities in March of last year, commentators and observers link the
paper's closure to articles it published shortly after the foiled March
21foiled military putsch. In one of those articles, it was stated that
'President Jammeh is Richer than The Gambia". The authorities are also
thought to have been irritated by the paper's March 23 edition in which it
was reported that Mr. Samba Bah, a onetime NIA Director General was among
those who made attempt on the life of the Jammeh administration on March 21
of 2006.

PANORAMA with 'Bulfaaleh'-The Gambia National Army,hatred,whispers,money-hungry soldiers!
Saturday, March 24, 2007 (1082 reads)

The Gambia National Army a ticking bomb!
There are whispers all over the place. The army has been reduced to a hot spot of whispering mouths. No one knows who is who? No one can tell whose camp is in control when it comes to loyalty. The only thing stopping some soldiers from showing their disloyalty to the current statusquo is that they cannot lay their hands on sophisticated arms. This is where the danger lies. These are men who are hiding and waiting for the right time. President Jammeh has succeeded in turning these soldiers against him, because he has always been been bragging  saying he is the man! His ego is what some of these young men in uniform cannot stand anymore. There are young soldiers who definitely hate his guts and rudeness on the national television.Special series to be compiled and presented by me 'Bulfaaleh' shall hit the computer screens once again.

By Hammadi Maasina,Security and Political Affairs Correspondent.
As we are piecing this together HE High Commissioner Tamsier Jallow The Gambian envoy in the United Kingdom is presenting his letters of credentials in Tel Aviv Israel. Jallow's image was captured on a Television network in that region (name withheld in case he denies about this TV network, we will release it). High Commissioner Jallow is accompanied to Tel Aviv by his deputy Mr Lang Yarbo. Jallow was heard on TV expressing his delight and reassuring the Israeli authorities of his government's readiness to cooperate with them. Cooperate with Israel? President Yahya Jammeh? Our question for Jallow and his boss President Jammeh is this one. How can Jammeh merge the two and go to sleep? Be a close friend of Iran, receive arms from Tehran only two months ago and then reassure Israel of his support?

War before and after lawlessness-Yahya Jammeh will face his fate sooner than we expect!

Hammadi Maasina.
Positive and negative are realities of life. Pessimism and optimism are off shoots of our mental exercise as people. The dangerous path is where the latter are excessive.Sometimes excessive pessimism breeds excessive negative thinking, whereas excessive optimism may also breed minds that are simply hanging on lost illusions. This is  where concepts related to the famous and abstract city of Eldorado emanate from. This is also why wise people and wise leaders use open minds. Open minds are always better when it comes to crisis management. On the contrary the former two extreme ends breed nothing but fear or false hope. Balancing the two where crisis is hanging in the horizon may help clear dark clouds that are blocking anything good within the long or short term. Otherwise the end result will be so bloody and deadly.

worsening economic conditions. The 32 Gambians were arrested by the police
on the beaches of Bakau for
allegedly attempting to travel to the European Union
through the Canary

To cure or not to cure: Is Yahya Jameh's AIDS cure a hoax
Monday, March 19, 2007 (751 reads)

By Associate Editor Muhammed Jawara

This is a question many people are asking all over the world. There is no definite answer to it as of now. That makes it all the more important a topic to discuss.
The jury is still out as to whether the whole issue is a hoax or a genuine breakthrough in the cure for AIDS that people are otherwise reluctant to accept. Since Yahya Jammeh's claim to have a cure for AIDS became a news that baffled a whole nation, and then the world, many people have come out with opinions to either support the claim or discredit it. I found it hard to take sides, thinking that within a month or so, the truth shall be known to all. However, the opposite is the case.

As US Embassy Launches Online Visa Application in The Gambia

By Landing Badjie Our National Correspondent

The Consular at the United States Embassy in Banjul has embarked upon a
communications offensive, informing the general public that visa application
has now been shifted to online electronic application.
Mr Chris Zimmer informed the Gambian media that visa applicants are now
saved the journey as they can now apply by visiting www.usembassybanjul.gm
According to him, about 6,036 applicants applied for a US visa in 2005/6 in
The Gambia, but only 2,737 were able to secure it, adding that about 33
people were caught using fake identities in the past.

Mr Zimmer explained that popular destinations for visa applicants in Banjul
are New York, Maryland, Seattle, Atlanta and Detroit.
He stated that they are working in tandem with the immigration and the
police to stem visa fraud-related cases such as women seeking visas with the
intention of giving birth to a child in the US, marriage fraud and
inappropriate business ventures.
" My office is here to facilitate easy travelling of US citizens and those
Gambians with genuine reasons of travelling to the US. We are therefore
working tirelessly to ensure this is done," Mr Zimmer posited.
Ms Mary Rose, an embassy staff, made a demonstration to the press as how to
fill a visa application on line.
