Gambia’s President Yahya Jammeh says the newly appointed paramount chief for Western Region, Demba Sanyang, is next to the Local Government Minister Ismaila Sambou, and can recommend for the dismissal of any chief in that region. Mr. Jammeh who was speaking during the official inauguration of the newly hired paramount chief Demba Sanyang, says Sanyang is as powerful as a Government Minister. He therefore calls on Chief within Sanyang’s jurisdiction to adhere to Sanyang’s orders at all time.

Charles Northfield, the General Manager of the Australian mining company Carnegie, appeared before the High Court in Banjul, yesterday charged with three counts of “economic crime” and stealing, the Freedom Newspaper can reveal. The worried looking Briton, who was hurriedly arraigned before the High Court, was also indicted for conspiracy to commit felony, among others. The British mining Engineer, who denied the four count theft charges has been helping the police in their investigations for the past couple of days.

In what could be described as a political earthquake , President Jammeh last evening fired the paramount chief of Western Region, Dembo Santa Bojang, the Freedom Newspaper can authoritatively report. Bojang who doubles as head chief of Brikama for many uninterrupted years, is believed to be the Gambia’s longest serving traditional chief. He has been relieved of duties with immediate effect. Chief Bojang is being replaced as paramount chief for Western Region by Seefo Demba Sanyang, the current chief of Lamin Village, according to reliable sources.

Prisoners In The Gambia Dying Due To Lack Of Medicine!!

Sick prisoners at the Mile 2 Central Prisons are desperately crying for help as they complained that they lack proper medical care. According to the inmates , their health conditions are deteriorating by the day because they could not buy their prescribed medicines. “Anytime we visit the RVHT we are told that there is no drugs , hence we are told to go to private pharmacies to buy drugs which we cannot afford,” said one of the sick inmates . The inmate says many of their colleagues were dying due to lack of drugs and good sanitation. He says they have long been neglected by the Government. He says many inmates have died in the recent past due to hunger and malnutrition.

Beggars living in the Greater Banjul area are increasingly finding life unlivable . Day in day out these underprivileged members of society are harassed by the law enforcement agents. Just of late, the police rounded up a good number of beggars and guess what they were paraded before a magistrate court to answer bogus charges.
