YAHYA JAMMEH’S WITCH HUNTS ARE “NORMAL”-The Watchman Wednesday, April 22, 2009 (689 reads)
YAHYA JAMMEH’S WITCH HUNTS ARE “NORMAL”
BY THE WATCHMAN
There will be a lot of outrage at this claim but before our esteemed readers start calling for my head on a platter, please hear me out. The APRC and its illegal actions against Gambian citizens always elicit an emotional response from supporters and opponents alike. However, once in a while, it behooves us to analyze and compare their actions using an international yardstick. The following interesting excerpts of a review of 2 books by Johann Hari will prove an interesting, albeit morally unjustifiable, point. The books are John Demos' The Enemy Within and Thomas Robisheaux's The Last Witch of Langenburg. Here we go.

Dida Halake Fights Back!!!
Hey, Let Watchman be! Says Halake!!!
Editor,
I must say that I differ with my “defender” below in that I do not think that Watchman’s comment re: “Halake intellectual prostitute” are out of order! Seriously, I do think that the comment is admissible as a “charge”. Nevertheless, the charge is not factually correct as I have been steadfast in my views since 2004 when FREEDOM v. Halake round-one first took place. I say it is factually incorrect to charge me with “prostitution” because I have always remained steadfast to the cause I championed: That Jammeh is a committed and visionary leader as far as INFRASTRUCTRE DEVELOPMENT of the country is concerned. I said that in the full-page BANTABA Interview conducted by Sheriff Bojang Snr in 2002. When Sheriff said “You sound as if you have fallen in love with Jammeh”, I replied “Love is not the correct word”. The correct word is admiration for the commitment to the development of the country – which is STILL ongoing.

Michael Scales On April 10 Student Killings!!!
Dear Mr.Editor,
Looking back to the first time I set foot in The Gambia on the 7th April 2000. I recall my guide asking me to pay the usual toll of £2 to each outstretched hand at Banjul International Airport, in order to effect a speedy and trouble free passage through to the car park. Small scale corruption which did not disturb me, but served as a prelude to the immense "culture shock" that was apparent. Making it to the yellow taxi and after negotiating the fare, we set off towards Banjul. My guide was adamant that in The Gambia "you are not allowed to criticize." I remember thinking ..this is a third world country and perhaps it is an affront to their dignity to highlight the appalling difference in living conditions here, compared to England. O.K. I thought," when in Rome do as the Romans do".

What is wrong with you guys? I wonder sometimes whether you and your so-called haters of our dear mother land are truly Gambians. If you guys feel the Jammeh's government is indeed bad, why not come out open if you are bold enough to challenge him and his friends. Shame on you all. I have been following your style of writing and came to the conclusion that you are nothing but a big fool and a coward.
In your recent pieces sent to the Freedom newspaper, you invaded people's privacies and made a lot of nonsensical comments. These comments were directed to the likes of Dida Halake. You went as far as exposing your dirty leans in public when GPU USA had some misunderstanding. This to my knowledge I believe has nothing to do with you as you are not part and parcel of that union.
Please Mr WATCHMAN or whatever your name is stop your personal attack on individuals and leave Yahya Jammeh alone.
Well, I have a little message for the Freedom newspaper. Pa, well I know you very well as you do know me too, please desist from inciting chaos to The Gambia and her people. If you think dragging into self exile will do you good, time will tell. I do not need any publicity from you FOOLS.
Long live The Gambia and her people

Editors,
Reading Foroyaa about Hon Tina Faal comments about the witch hunting is very annoying and out of date. Presently, am doing my investigation but to no avail. I am trying to get her file case number . at the NIA so that she can be exposed. Tina and one of his colleagues have forged signatories and sold a land by using government stamps. But because the NIA boss is Lang Tombong’s boyboy ,and with the help of the Speaker they are trying to settle it out. I will like you also to help and investigate. I know that it is the Speaker, who is using her to say what she said about the witch hunting. Tina is not that clever that's why the speaker used her ,and cannot used other members to speak about the witch hunting.

DIDA HALAKE: INTERNATIONAL INTELLECTUAL PROSTITUTE-WRITES THE WATCHMAN!!! Sunday, April 19, 2009 (608 reads)
DIDA HALAKE: INTERNATIONAL INTELLECTUAL PROSTITUTE
BY THE WATCHMAN
There have been many sellouts in politics especially in Africa and within The Gambia itself. Able and once respectable men, eager for the chance at self promotion, have jumped at the chance of being driven around by chauffeurs in vehicles provided by the state. To these enthusiastic social climbers, this is the epitome of "achievement". They get to hang out with the powers that be, snag invitations to state dinners and are constantly seen smiling widely during state sponsored photo ops such as hospital openings and wasteful beauty pageants. The various miscreants in this scheme include economists, scientists, philosophers, and most dangerously, the media. While these characters, in their smug self-regard, flaunt their new credentials and other commendations given to them by governments with tarnished reputations, the intelligent public overwhelmingly begs to differ. In fact, they view such action as out and out prostitution. Dida Halake is one such prostitute and until he got tired and bored of using him, Yahya Jammeh was his favorite client.

My Review of Dr Saine's latest book-Writes Dr. Ebrima Ceesay
“The book provides us with irrefutable evidence that The Gambia under Yahya Jammeh can only be described as a military dictatorship under the guise of a civilian government,”Ceesay argues.
The Paradox of Third-Wave Democratization in Africa: The Gambia under AFPRC-APRC Rule, 1994-2008 – by Abdoulaye Saine, Lexington Books, USA, 2009, pp187. Index. Hardcover $65 ISBN 978-0 7391 2921 0
Book review by Ebrima Ceesay, UK
This is unquestionably an important book by a writer whose accomplishments as a scholar, social science researcher, critic and activist on human rights in The Gambia in particular and Africa in general are widely respected and acknowledged. Dr Saine is a highly productive and interesting scholar who has been researching Gambian politics under Yahya Jammeh from the very moment the Gambian army toppled the civilian government of President Jawara in a coup d’état on 22nd July 1994. His book is therefore timely, incisive and above all, presents an original research on the economic, social and politics aspects of Gambian state and society. And because of Dr Saine’s expertise both as a political scientist and political economist, he offers - in the book and very uniquely - lucid, clear, coherent, original, important and critical insights into our understanding of contemporary Gambian politics.

….Hey Watchman, Keep it up!!!! Says Halake!!!
Thank you for making my Saturday! Truly, I admire your writing style and I must say you do have “the gift” which comes through in your writing.I am sure you do not expect me to hurl "intercontinental missiles" towards you in response to your “attack” on my person, but hey we all want people to express themselves. I most certainly do not see myself anywhere near the likes of Steve Biko (Biko takes up the first 4 pages of my book Freedom Essays) - but it is good for this old and battered ego to be mentioned in the same breath with the Great Man, even if only by a mere Gambian Watchman!

GamEconomics Factor With Yankuba Mamburay: THE CONCEPT OF ISLAMIC INSURANCE (TAKAFUL)
By Yankuba Mamburay, Atlanta, Georgia
The need for us the Gambians to educate ourselves about Islamic Insurance, commonly known as Tackaful, has grown tremendously with the establishment of Takaful Gambia Limited not too long ago. Though not in a formal setting as today, the concept of Takaful has been in existence for the past 1400 years. Some Muslim scholars were somewhat apprehensive about the need to have insurance companies that conduct their transactions based solely on Islamic rules and regulations. This is because many had the belief that there was no point to establish such companies as long as Muslims do what they are supposed to do by giving out alms, Zakat, helping the poor and the needy, etc.

BANJUL LETTER: DIDA HALAKE SHOULD STOP PATRONIZING GAMBIANS
BY THE WATCHMAN
Roots Rock Reggae legends Bob Marley and Peter Tosh advocated African cohesion in their songs "Africa Unite" and "African" respectively. Marcus Mosiah Garvey is an international icon famous for his pan-African tenets and "Back to Africa" movement through organizations such as the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League (UNIA-ACL). Leopold Sedar Senghore, venerated Senegalese statesman, stirred the imagination with his concept of Negritude during the quest for solidarity in Francophone Africa and beyond. The concept of African unity has been an ongoing, albeit unsuccessful, quest as evidenced by the impotence of the now defunct OAU and the continuing ineffectiveness of the AU. This however has not deterred NGOs, politicians, mercenaries and other unsavory characters from cynically exploiting the matter for their own shady ulterior motives. During his tumultuous stay in The Gambia, Dida Halake in his capacity as a "journalist" managed to fool many and infuriate multitudes by dint of his views on matters political and sometimes trivial. The raw reactions, pro and con, that he generates among Gambians is testament to the ability of citizens in that small but proud nation to detect a fraud when they see one. His recent lazy, self-promoting, cut and paste article "ALL of Africa must be home to ALL of us Africans" is the latest illustration of his oppturnistic dabbling.

Breaking News:Gambian Government Denies Media Reports that Soldiers Invade Senegal In Search Of Suspected Fleeing Witches!!!!
…Govt’ Accuses Wal Fajr of Spreading False News!!!!
Following a Freedom Newspaper lead story, in which we reported that The Gambian army pursued suspected witches into neighboring Senegal, the Government today issued a terse statement accusing Wad Fajr radio of broadcasting what it calls false and malicious reports about The Gambia and her people. The Government rejected such media reports. It calls on the Senegambian media-most importantly Wad Fajr to desist from such negative reportage of Gambian news. Below is the full text of the Government press release.
………………………………………
The Government of the
Republic of
The Gambia’s attention has been drawn to the recent unfounded pronouncement by a media organization of a neighbouring country (Wad Fajr) to the effect that some members of The Gambia Armed Forces illegally entered and operated in the territory of that country. The Government of the
Republic of
The Gambia firmly and strongly condemns and refutes without hesitation such an unwarranted allegation.
In light of such repeated, unethical and unprofessional conduct by Wal Fajr, the Government of the Republic of the Gambia wishes to express its continued commitment and willingness to uphold and strengthen the bonds of friendly relations that exist between the brotherly peoples of the Republics of The Gambia and Senegal on the basis of mutual respect of each other’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.
It is in light of this spirit that the Government of the Republic of the Gambia would like to call on the Senegambian media in general and Wal Fajr in particular to desist from such acts and urge them to support the propagation of the culture of peaceful coexistence, amity and stability which has been positively ingrained in the Senegambia region.

Below is the Freedom story which provoked the Government reaction. Please read on....

Senegal Detains Gambian Soldiers/Witch Hunters!!!!
…Gambian Military Crossed Border In pursuit Of Witches
Senegal has detained Gambian security officers, who crossed The Gambia/Senegalese border during a hot chase of fleeing suspected witches, the Freedom Newspaper can reveal. The Gambian soldiers forcefully entered the Senegalese border village of Darselameh, where they tried to capture fleeing suspected witches, sources said. One of the suspected witches was identified as Bully Badjie, a local drummer from Sintet. A drama immediately ensued between The Gambian soldiers and residents of Darselameh, who insisted that the fleeing Sintet refugees would not move an inch. The villagers then tried to detain The Gambian military, after accusing them of invading their territorial sovereignty. There was a total pandemonium in the area, as The Gambian soldiers tried to escape from lawful custody. The soldiers were later handed to the Senegalese Gendarmerie for further processing.
The Senegalese Gendarmerie were alerted, who responded by officially detaining The Gambian military including the witch hunters. The soldiers were warned to desist from such illegal invasion or risked being jailed in Casamance. The detainees were later released, but were warned not to pursue fleeing suspected witches into Casamance. Darselameh is situated in Casamance. It is ten miles away from Sintet.
Solo Bojang, a personnel of Paramilitary was among the detainees. Mr. Bojang is the President’s uncle. He and other paramilitary officers, including soldiers have been assigned to help clean Foni, and other localities of witches.
Meanwhile, residents of Foni Kampasa, Kambusema, and Sintet are fleeing to neighboring Senegalese border village of Darselameh. The villagers said they fear of being abducted by the witch hunters.
Sources reaching this paper say General Tamba’s own Aunty was recently abducted by the witch doctors.
So far, five people have died in the hands of the witch hunters, dozen others languishing in hospitals. The detainees were forced to drink poisonous liquids by their captives. The President Yahya Jammeh has assigned the witch hunters to arrest suspected witches in the country. During the process, many suspected witches have died. They could not withstand the drugs given to them by their captives.
Meanwhile, concerned villagers are appealing to the United Nations to help investigate the human rights atrocities perpetrated by The Gambian military and the witch hunters. They also want to see an end to the culture of violence in the country.
