Poem:Here is the tree Friday, February 09, 2007 (693 reads)
Author: Essa Bokarr SEY.
Poem:Here is the tree!
Here is the tree, the tree, the tree, the tree!
No no no! do not chop the tree.
This tree has cheese in its stem.
Hey chopper do not chop this tree.
Can't you see the tree in this field?
Can't you pose your feet in this field called freedom?
Oh...Oh! I can see the tree!
Yes! I can see the tree!
Chase'em apes, fleas and mosquitoes from the tree.
Hey apes and team please flee!
We want you to flee because you are a flea.
How long are you going to suck our blood?
How many pints so far?
Aaaah! this is painful because the tree is weeping.
These are tears not fluid!

By Paul Bellman
Dear Editor,
Please publish this for the public interest so people can know that the Gambia has capable and brilliant well trained scientists. In reaction to the fake HIV/AIDS results of patients who were treated by the President of the country, I must say how low can one stop to deceive so many people without regards to their feelings.I am a Nigerian but I know quite a few brilliant Gambian Scientists whom I have worked with in both the Gambia at the MRC and in Britain. A few of them that come to mind are Dr. Tumani Corrah, Dr. Assan Jaye, Dr. Abdoulie Jack, Dr. Sana Ceesay; I could go on and on. Some of these guys have trained some of the World's best Universities in America and in the UK, including the renowned Cambridge University. Some of these guys have worked for the MRC for over a decade as Senior Scientist in Medical Research and could have been great assets to the country in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

Today, we are publishing pictures featuring Gambian President Yahya Jammeh administering his new found HIV/Aids drugs. The President claimed he invented the "the said drugs" made locally. The people drinking these drugs are people diagonised with HIV, the virus that causes aids. The Gambian President said he had been given the mandate to cure HIV, but would not say who gavehim such a mandate. The Health Ministry claimed that the patients cured by the President were tested by Dakar based Medical Dotor. Read this statement issued by the Ministry of Health regarding the outcome of the said test:
The Department of State for Health and Social Welfare is hereby updating the general public on the progress made by His Excellency's Herbal treatment to nine patients with HIV infection.

Breaking News:The Big Interview!!! DA Jawo Speaks...Jammeh aids cure provokes wild controversy! Tuesday, February 06, 2007 (1554 reads)
"What is even more disturbing in the whole saga is the negative role being openly played by the health professionals, particularly Dr. Mbowe as the health minister, as they are supposed to be guided by their professional ethics rather than allow themselves to be cajoled by political considerations. We would have understood the position taken by Dr. Mbowe if he had been just any other politician, but as a health professional himself, everyone expected him to have been bold enough to tell President Jammeh the truth that he was venturing into an area he has no business in. At least he and the other health professionals at the Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital as well as those at the National AIDS Secretariat should have mustered the courage to tell President Jammeh the truth and be ready to face the consequences."said a leading Gambian journalist, cum political commentator Demba Ali Jawo in an exlusive interview with the Freedom Newspaper. Mr.Jawo who is the former President of the Gambia Press Union commented on a wide raneg of issues in this master piece interview. The murder of jorunalist Deyda Hydara, the opposition's failure to come together, the state of press freedom in the Gambia among host of other topical issues. Below is full text of the interview Freedom's Managing Editor Pa Nderry M'Bai had with Mr.Jawo. Please read on.
.............................................................
Freedom Newspaper: Recently, President Yahya Jammeh provoked a heated controversy within and outside the country, with his surprising news that he had a cure for HIV/AIDS. Mr. Jammeh did not stop at that. He also announces that he had been given "the mandate to cure AIDS and Asthma. What do you make of Jammeh's statement?
DA Jawo: It indeed came not only as a surprises to me and I am sure most other Gambians, but also as a big embarrassment to hear President Jammeh claim to have the “mandate” to cure HIV/AIDS and Asthma through the use of herbal concoctions and incantations from the Holy Quran. It indeed sounds like he got the “mandate” from a spiritual deity, which smacks of superstition.
While no doubt The Gambia and indeed all Gambians would be very proud if it is indeed proven that our head of state has got the magical formula to cure this dreaded global epidemic which has eluded even the greatest of all scientists, but his actions seem to be risking an embarrassment of global proportions for himself and this country.

Breaking News:Freedom Clocks One Year! California-based nonprofit organization praise Editors... Friday, February 02, 2007 (504 reads)
By Ted Lipien
FreeMediaOnline.org Free Media Online, San Francisco, CA, February 2, 2007 -- Several days ago, an independent journalist from Gambia had asked me to write about journalism and dictatorship in Africa. An Internet newspaper he edits while living in exile in the United States is celebrating its first anniversary. He wanted to start a discussion about strategies for bringing democracy to Gambia and other African nations still ruled by dictators.I know something about journalism and dictatorship having spent 20 years during the Cold War opposing communist rule in Poland through the medium of radio. From 1973 until 1993, I was a journalist at the Voice of America (VOA) Polish Service. In the 1980s, the Solidarity trade union, the Catholic Church and various human rights organizations in Poland intensified their nonviolent struggle for democracy. In their efforts to bring information about their activities to the general public, they relied heavily on independent journalists and underground publishing and media in Poland and international broadcasters in the West. After unsuccessful attempts to crush Solidarity and subsequent negotiations with the pro-democratic opposition, the communist regime in Poland was replaced by a democratically-elected government in 1989. In 2006 I left VOA and I am now running a California-based nonprofit organization, FreeMediaOnline.org, which supports independent journalism worldwide.
