Human rights activists not given up on Jammeh
By Kemo Cham
Despite his carefully calculated maneuver to save himself from the obvious hullabaloo that awaited him at CHOGM, Yahya Jammeh still has much to worry about, if the words of Maja Daruwala, Director of the India-based Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI), are anything to go by. Mrs Daruwala has vowed that the issue over the refutation of anti-human rights remarks by Yahya Jammeh is not over. Her declaration, as published by Trinidad and Tobago Guardian, came shortly after the authorities in the Caribbean nation, host of next week’s Common Wealth summit, indicated that any decision to take action against the Gambian dictator for his threatening remark will be rest in the hands of heads of governments.

HOW YAYA JAMMEH IS ABLE TO MANIPULATE THE JUDICIARY

The appointment of Nigerian prosecutors Akomaye Agim as Chief Justice, Wowo and Emmanuel Fagbenle as High Court Judges constitutes a pernicious regression to the administration of justice in The Gambia. To add salt to injury, the recent appointments of Nigerians as Principal Magistrates of all Magistrates Courts throughout The Gambia concludes the ultimate colonisation of our judiciary by Nigerian mercenary lawyers. Let’s remember that they are the ones controlling the prosecuting team at Ministry of Justice as well as principal advisers to the Attorney General. The Director of Civil Litigation is also a Nigerian, as well as the ones drafting our laws. They command our sovereign fate by law, thanks to principal conspirators Yaya Jammeh and Justice Minister Marie Saine Firdaus.

Michael Scales Responds To Mai Fatty’s Letter
Dear Mr Fatty,
This is a difficult letter to write. May I first of all thank you on behalf of my dear wife and myself for your thanks and praise. This is entirely undeserved but much appreciated nonetheless. The letter from The Baroness Kinnock, has much personal meaning, accompanied by a sense of personal, professional satisfaction for me. If you consider that I am from poor parents who were avid supporters of The British Labour Party all their lives..... my only regret, is that my Father is not alive to witness that Glynis Kinnock mentions my name seven times, in her well considered letter.

GMC Leader Mai Fatty Praises Michael Scales
THANK YOU MR. MICHAEL SCALES
I’d like to commend Mr. Michael Scales, British philanthropist and businessman, for his kind intervention in trying to secure British Government’s active political support for international action in favour of victims of victims of human rights abuse in The Gambia, and in particular The GPU 7. The documentary information to this effect recently published online provided further assurance that Mr. Scales and his wife Her Royal Highness are genuine friends of The Gambia. It is clear that Mr. Scales’ intervention was purely on principle, his conviction and love for Gambian people. On behalf of GMC and all crusaders for justice and human rights in The Gambia, thank you very much.

Jammeh Cancels CHOGM Trip Meeting For Security Reasons-State House Sources Revealed!!!
By Staff Reporter Bakary Sonko, Banjul
Details are emerging regarding President Yahya Jammeh’s conspicuous absence at the CHOGM meeting slated to take place in Trinidad later this month. Reports have it that the President’s decision not to attend the Summit was due to security related issues. Mr. Jammeh is increasingly worried about the loyalty of the country’s military. He fears being toppled if he ventures into overseas trips, said a close aide to the President. Mr. Jammeh has informed the relevant authorities presiding over the CHOGM meeting about his intentions of not attending the Summit. He failed to advance any reason for his move, but sources close to corridors of power in Banjul hinted that the President’s decision was as a result of fear.

Vision and Mission
Sovereignty resides in the people. The people of the Gambia are owners of public power and authority. They have the absolute right to determine how the Gambia is governed. Leaders are mere trustees of public power and authority. They are to utilize such power and authority on behalf of the people to safeguard their economic, social, cultural, civil and political rights to ensure their collective liberty, dignity and prosperity while safeguarding their fundamental rights and freedoms. As public trustees they are required to be transparent in their exercise of public authority. They are also required to render account to the people regarding their period of stewardship of national affairs in order for the people to determine whether they are worthy of their continued trust and confidence.

In this regard, the facts reveal that after 12 years of AFPRC/APRC rule the government has not lived up to its promises of transforming the Gambia “into a dynamic middle income country, a financial centre, a tourist paradise, a trading export oriented agricultural and manufacturing nation, thriving on market policies and a vibrant private sector, sustained by a well educated , trained, skilled, healthy, self reliant and enterprising population and guaranteeing a well balanced ecosystem and a decent standard of living for one and for all, under a system of government based on the consent of the citizenry” as stipulated in its strategic document, i.e. Vision 2020. Instead of being a “dynamic middle income country” the Gambia has become a heavily indebted poor country with 69% of its population living in abject poverty. It is evident that export of agricultural produce is being jeopardized by poor marketing arrangement. Manufacturing is almost absent. The private sector is starved of investment capital thus leading to the contraction of the productive base. This has led to poor revenue earnings, escalation of internal and external borrowing to meet the requirement of both the recurrent and development budgets, insignificant growth in employment and income, skyrocketing cost of living and perpetual rise in poverty.

According to Freedom Now, Senate appropriators said that the treatment of journalists, especially of Ebrima Manneh, “will be considered . . . in assessing continued United States assistance for The Gambia.”
