Head Master Tamba Fofana has also been released from custody. Mr.Tamba who was accused of supporting the opposition United Democratic Party was released along side with Rambo and others. The men were held on alleged security matters, even though the dictatorship failed to file any charges against them. Sources close to the UDP have deplored the continued of these men without trial. This comes amid international pressure on the administration of President Yahya Jammeh to free the political detainees.

In what appeared to be a Presidential gesture to free political prisoners, the detained UDP official Ousaman Jatta, alias Rambo has been released from custody after spending one year behind bars at Sar Ngai police station, the Freedom Newspaper can reveal. Rambo was released alongside with the CCF official Kanyiba Kanyi. The popular politician who appeared confident traveled many hours before he could access his family in Bakau. Mr. Jatta who was in an excited mood said he thanked God for giving him chance to reunite with his family. The popular politician told our Correspondent that he was held at the Sare Ngai police station for the past months without any formal charge proffered against him. “ I want to thank God for allowing me to see my family once again. I'm well and fit.” he said

May i express my appreciation to His Excellency President Jammeh, for the unconditional release,of the representatives of Amnesty International.Whilst there remains several other troubleing issues unresolved, for my part, i see this as a step in the right direction towards reconcilliation and peaceful cooperation of the outstanding humanitarian concerns.As a former advocate and supporter of his tenure in office, my constructive critisisms of his management are restricted to alleged human rights abuses, which flow in contradiction to the articles contained within the Gambian Constitution..of which he is the custodian.

Mr. Willy Joof, Permanent Secretary No. 1 at the Department of State for Foreign Affairs, has been removed from office with immediate effect, reliable sources informed this paper. Mr. Joof was also invited for questioning at the police Headquarters in Banjul yesterday afternoon.

Mr. Joof’s invitation for questioning follows that of Bala Garba Jahumpa, Batata Juwara, Bai Ousman Secka and Tijan Bah, all former officials of the Department of State for Foreign Affairs.

Mr. Joof, according to our source, is being questioned in connection with administrative matters, following a petition against him.

Abdoulie John, a journalist working for the Banjul-based pro-government "Daily Observer" newspaper, was on October 9, 2007 dismissed by the Managing Director, Saja Taal. John is the fourth journalist to be sacked from the "Daily Observer" in recent months.Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) sources reported that the journalist was sacked for corresponding for a foreign media. Sources quoted John’s dismissal letter as stating, "You have been warned to stop serving as a foreign correspondent. We have no option but to terminate your services with the newspaper."

The disgraced former Foreign Minister Bala Garba Jahumapa widely known as the action man has been set free by the Gambian police amid allegations that the Minister conspired with Bai Ousman Secka, Batata Juwara and others to defraud the state by engaging in passport scam. The office of the Inspector General of police has dropped charges against Bala Garba Jahumpa, while the remaining accused persons are awaiting their fate in the courts. Police Spokesman Sulayman Secka told the Freedom Newspaper Correspondent that Mr.Jahumpa was the only accused person cleared from any wrongdoing. Inspector Secka Jahumpa said have no case to answer as far as the said case was concerned. “Our investigations did not link Bala Jahumpa to any fraud. He has been freed. Instructions were given for the charges brought against Balla be dropped. The other accused persons are to go to court based on what the evidence gathered against them.” said the police spokesman.

Money Changers Defy Jammeh’s Decree to regulate Foreign Currencies

There is a major scarcity of foreign exchange in The Gambia, as local money changers have embarked on hoarding their monies, in retaliation to President Yahya Jammeh’s decree to determine the value of major international currencies, such as the mighty dollar and the pounds sterling, the Freedom Newspaper can authoritatively report. Almost all major banks across the country had been affected by this protest action. Bank officials at the Trust Bank, the Guarantee Bank and the First International Bank who spoke to this paper on condition of anonymity lamented about President Jammeh’s recent move to regulate international currencies value. “ As you can see, there is no serious banking activity taking place here. Our Foreign Exchange Department has been rendered bankrupt by the President’s move. Most of our clients (money changers) have stopped coming here. They refused to trade their foreign exchange at loss. This bank lacks foreign exchange. With the Hajj just round the corner, many people are finding it difficult to have access to foreign exchange. The dollar and the pound are hard to come by. They are no where to be seen. This is a scary development. When you have a retarded President, such a thing is bound to happen. The Central Bank, which is expected to provide the Government with accurate information about economic issues are hell bent on distorting the economic realities of this country. The economy is not moving. This is the reality on the ground.” said a Bank official.
