Dear Mr. President,

As an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to defending press freedom worldwide, we welcome the provisional release from prison of four Senegalese journalists arrested in recent weeks because of their critical stories. We believe that the government’s continued use of criminal defamation and insult laws to jail and prosecute journalists undermines Senegal’s democratic credentials. We are calling on you to use your influence to finally implement your 2004 pledge to repeal criminal penalties for press offenses, including defamation.

Returns? Blood Diamonds in Africa

 By Scott A Morgan

We all remember what happened back in the 1990s. In Sierra Leone and Angola insurgents financed their rebellions by mining illicit diamonds. In Angola the UNITA movement used the trade after both South Africa and the United States ceased their assistance. In the case of Sierra Leone it was a way for the Rebels to purchase Arms to carry their struggle against an  unpopular Government. There also have been allegations that Al-Qaida has used the precious stones in a similar way.

Breaking News:Gambia could not benefit for Debt Relief in year 2000, as country went off track-says Finance Minister!!
Wednesday, November 14, 2007 (965 reads)

Debt Relief has been a major issue on the continent. Developing countries want their external debts to be written off. In short, they want such debts to be cancelled. As Liberia received debt relief, impoverished nations like The Gambia are also clamoring for such international gestures. But there are set rules put in place for nations to benefit from such programs. Maintaining sound economic and political policies are one of the requirements. Gambia’s Finance Minister in a letter sent to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) underscores the need for The Gambia to be admitted into the Debt Relief Program. Below is Balla Gaye’s letter.

Banjul, The Gambia

February 7, 2007

Mr. Rodrigo de Rato

Managing Director

International Monetary Fund

Washington, D.C. 20431

Dear Mr. de Rato:

1. The macroeconomic environment in The Gambia has improved significantly over the

last three years as a result of policies implemented by the government and the Central Bank

of The Gambia (CBG) to reverse earlier policy lapses. Inflation has returned to low singledigit

levels, the exchange rate of the dalasi has stabilized, and international reserves have

been rebuilt to a comfortable level. Nevertheless, the country still faces many development

challenges. A majority of the population lives below the poverty line, and the narrow

production base of the economy makes it vulnerable to exogenous shocks such as drought.

Furthermore, a heavy debt service burden has limited the government’s scope for

undertaking growth-promoting and poverty-reducing expenditures.

Editorial:Politics Of Dishonesty And Not Honesty!! Banjul Intellectuals political Guinea Pigs for Jammeh

Politics Of Dishonesty And Not Honesty!!

Banjul Old Guard Betrayed The People

The intellectual Community in Banjul, known as the Banjul old guard, could be best referred to as “political guinea pigs.” Gambian President Yahya Jammeh has long been recycling these so called intellectuals in the name of “Governance Reforms” and incompetency . Banjul matters a lot to President Jammeh politically and as such he would do everything humanely possible to win the minds and hearts of the City residents. What’s befalling though is Mr.Jammeh’s open political hypocrisy. Each time, he fires a Banjulian, he would try to replace the sacked official with either a family member or resident of the City. Such moves are calculated to woe political support. It’s about time for Gambians to closely monitor the way President Jammeh runs this country. He is undermining fabric of society in The Gambia, in the name of clinging onto power.

By Karafa Badjie

Facts are emerging about the circumstances surrounding the sacking of the disgraced Gambian Health Minister Dr. Tamsir Mbowe. Well placed sources close to corridors of power in Banjul, say the former Minister was implicated in a conspiracy deal , which was reached to sell ‘Expired rice” to the poverty stricken Gambian Community . A Lebanese rice importer, who is said to be a close friend of Mbowe was said to be the brain behind such corruption schemes .According to our sources, Mbowe tried to use his powers and influence as a State Minister to authorize the sale of the expired rice, even though the said rice was earlier declared unfit for human consumption by personnel of the Health and Hygiene Department. The sacked Minister was said to have given green light to the Lebanese importer to sell the expired rice, which prompted Government’s immediate intervention to protect the impoverished populace from consuming the bad rice.
