By F Ceesay, UK
Dear Mr. Editor,
As a concern Gambian citizen that living in The UK, it is with profound disgust to read the garbage that was themed by the president Jammmeh on our country 45th independent anniversary. Before going further may I at this juncture categorically affirm that nothing that this man say does not represent majority of Gambian citizen. I left The Gambia in 1996 immediately after the first election, and ever since this president has cling on to power without any realistic date liberating back this country. Paradoxically, the president wants the same British people he is bashing to still visit the Gambia as tourists.

The tiny nation of The Gambia—a popular holiday resort for Western tourists, would soon witnessed a dramatic transformation on its tourism industry policies, with the view of restoring tourists and investors confidence, President Yahya Jammeh has declared. Mr. Jammeh believes that tourism is an important sector in the nation’s economy, which accounts for the greater percentage of Gambia’s Gross Domestic Product—known as (GDP). Mr. Jammeh opined that such an important sector needs to be given the attention it deserved in the interest of fulfilling the nation’s economic agenda—which is to transform the mini West African state into an economic power in the region.

Western Tourist Reacts To Gambia's 45th Anniversary
By Nigel Speakman, Tourist
I read your newspaper everyday now. Since I got involved with the scouts in the Gambia I have had quite a crash course in political despotism and its affects. Of what a glorious institution the NIA is and the sad state of the Gambia's political institutions. However, what has finally got me to write was the article about your President blaming the British for your country's lack of development. Well, that is just not true and everyone knows it.

Jammeh Blasts Western Powers- Blames Britain For Gambia’s Plight
As Gambian Leader Calls For National Development
By Staff Reporter Bakary Gibba, Banjul
Gambia’s 45th independence anniversary was characterized by anti Western bashings, as the country’s President Yahya Jammeh lambasted Britain—Gambia’s former colony for being responsible for the nation’s underdevelopment during pre-independence era. Mr. Jammeh who was applauded by an excited crowd—mainly party supporters, school children, and a cross section of the community said Gambia’s former colonial masters ruled the impoverished nation for over two decades without initiating any meaningful development in the country—which shared borders with neighboring Senegal. Known for his anti Western slogans, Jammeh informed his audience that the British only built one High School, and four Health Centers in The Gambia—during their forced occupation of our land. He accuses the British of exposing their former subjects (Gambians) into an untold hardship, characterized by poverty. Jammeh said good governance work in tandem with development, and his administration had recorded significant achievements during the span of 15 years in office.

Gambia: Independence? What Independence? Thursday, February 18, 2010 (535 reads)
Independence? What Independence?
By Baba Galleh Jallow
In a classic work of historical and political theory, the German philosopher of history Reinhart Koselleck discourses a “space of experience” and “horizon of expectation” that may be used to chart the trajectory of historical evolution. Koselleck suggests that the past, the present, and the future are all part of a single movement of historical time within which society is embedded. Today’s “space of experience” was yesterday’s “horizon of expectation.” In other words, all human actions in the present are informed by past experience and motivated by future expectation. It is within this framework of historical temporality that I propose to examine the idea of African independence, which, I will argue, represents a myth for the great majority of Africans on the continent.
