In what was described as a major political gathering in the town of Brikama, Saturday, United Democratic leader Ousainou Darboe, told his jubilant supporters that the UDP/NRP alliance will send President Yahya Jammeh's government packing come October, 2006. Darboe, who appeared focused explained to his followers that the circumstances that led to his sudden resignation from NADD. The UDP leader says there was distrust amongst coalition leaders and as such he Darboe, was not convinced that such a political front can be a success story. The UDP leader says Gambians are yearning for change of political leadership and his party will team up with NRP to realise such a dream. |

Tensions are mounting in The Gambian military, as some soldiers who served as peacekeepers in the troubled region of Sudan are complaining about their unpaid allowances. The soldiers who wished to remain anonymous told The Freedom Newspaper that since their return from Sudan, "the Jammeh government did not pay them their allowances", which they say is amounting to thousands of Gambian dalasis.

Mr.President, we are appalled by the economic breakdown in our country. Business is not working these days. Our markets and other commercial centres across the country, had been reduced to ghost markets. People don't have money to buy basic commodities. While, you continue to live large, our people are dying of hunger. This is unacceptable, Mr.President. We expect you to cut down your flamboyance life style and bail out our poverty stricken citizens, who can hardly can afford one decent meal a day.
