Editorial: The End Of Press Freedom In Gambia!!! Tuesday, August 11, 2009 (735 reads)
Editorial: The End Of Press Freedom In Gambia!!!
The United Democratic Party raises pertinent issues on its terse press release. The central theme of that press release centered on the unpredictable future of the country’s private press-most importantly the Point Newspaper. The call for the need to decriminalize the country’s repressive press laws is also a welcomed development. We entirely agree with the UDP. The jailing of the six journalists will indeed have an adverse effect on the future of Point, and the Foroyaa Newspapers respectively. Pap Saine, and Ebrima Sawneh played an important role towards the sustenance of the Point. This is evident on their respective roles in maintaining a rich, authoritative, and reliable content for that paper.

Gambia’s Main Opposition UDP Reacts To The Jailing Of Journalists!!!
DE-CRIMINALIZE SPEECH-SAYS UDP
Gambia’s main opposition United Democratic Party is condemning the jailing of the country’s six journalists. “The conviction of EBRIMA SAWANEH and his colleagues last week is the climax of the continuous erosion of the freedom of speech which started with APRC decrees No 70 and 71,” says the UDP statement, which was sent to the Freedom Newspaper. While the party says it does not questioned the legality of the convictions imposed against the journalists, it raises serious concerns over the impartiality of the trial. “We do not question the legality of the conviction and sentence imposed on Mr. Sawaneh and his colleagues. We however question the moral justification for their trial and subsequent conviction and sentence when one considers that the two media houses reproduced the reaction to some aspects of the President’s interview with KEBBA DIBBA of GRTS.” The statement said. Below is the full text of the UDP Statement.
…………………………………………………………….
DE-CRIMINALIZE SPEECH
The conviction of EBRIMA SAWANEH and his colleagues last week is the climax of the continuous erosion of the freedom of speech which started with APRC decrees No 70 and 71.Whilst there is no dispute that every government to enact laws and provide for the appropriate mechanism for these, no government has the moral authority to deprive any class of citizens the right of freedom of expression of views and opinion by the use of archaic colonial legislations that have lost relevance in their countries of origin.

State House Sergeant Warns About Jammeh’s Possible Assassination!!!
A proclaimed military sergeant at the state house in Banjul has hinted about the possible assassination of President Yahya Jammeh in the not too distant future. The sergeant said the only alternative for Jammeh is to resign, and handover the country to Vice President Isatou Njie Saiday. Failure of which, he warns will result to Jammeh's murder. Here is the email we received-reproduced verbatim.

RE: NO TIME TO BE AFRAID.
Hi Freedom,
I read Mathew’s challenge with great interest. And with Tamba’s photo to go with the story-the implication seem to be for Tamba to lead the operation. That will never happen for the following reasons: Tamba is a coward and scared shitless of Boss. He doesn’t have the guts to mount such an operation. Tamba is greedy. And knowing that, Boss has stuffed him with so much money, rank and privileges that the guy is comfortable for life and will never take any risks. Even if he was able to take-over, because of his greedy nature, he would not hesitate to sell our country.

Gambia:An Open Letter to Members of The Gambia’s Military and Security Forces Sunday, August 09, 2009 (1365 reads)
An Open Letter to Members of The Gambia’s Military and Security Forces
…No Time To Be Afraid- Says Mathew K Jallow
Dear Brothers and Sisters, Nieces and Nephews
I have taken the liberty to address all of you on behalf of every freedom loving Gambian. I do so recognizing the important role the military is supposed to play in the affairs of our country. I also do so with the knowledge that most Gambians cannot, through no fault of theirs, speak for themselves. By now, the entire world knows and recognizes that we in The Gambia are not a free people; that we have been brutalized for fifteen long years and still the tragedy of this regime continues. The executions, tortures and frequent arrest and detention of our people is not a secret to anyone one, in fact, some among your ranks, it is sad to say, who swore to protect our country and its people, have in fact committed brutal heinous executions and intimidations of our fellow citizens. Besides, our prisons are also filled to capacity with Gambians who are suffering and dying for no reason, whatsoever.
