Michael Scales Reacts To Halake’s Move To Buy The Observer

Dear Mr.Editor,

They say the shortest distance between friends is a laugh?  Reading the "fight" to buy The Daily Observer.....produced the biggest laugh this year. I adore African humor..."it cuts through stainless steel" Let me not speak unjustly about anyone without just cause, experience or evidence.

Former Speaker Fatou Jahumpa Ceesay Arrested

Former Speaker of Parliament Fatou Jahumpa Ceesay has been arrested, sources reaching this paper said. The disgraced speaker is among the  hundreds of  detainees held by the state on allegations of coup plot. Details of her arrest are sketchy at this hour. Sources said FJC has been missing for days. Madam FJC recently took out a ritual at the Bijilo Beach, where she slaughtered a goat along the riverside. She was spotted on site, and was accompanied by a cab driver. It is not clear if her arrest has anything to do with the sacrificed goat. But sources said the speaker has been languishing in state custody.

The Oppressor and the Oppressed

By Baba Galleh Jallow

Clearly, one of the most intractable problems facing Africa today is the problem of oppression. The continent is littered with an ugly coterie of oppressive political regimes as well as a critical mass of people trying to resist this oppression, getting stigmatized, jailed, maimed, exiled, and killed in the process. One of the means at the disposal of this critical mass of oppressed “freedom fighters” is the acquisition of knowledge and a greater understanding of the nature of the oppressor in relation to themselves, the oppressed. For it is not enough that we know the oppressor; we also need to know ourselves as people trying to bring about an end to oppression. This short essay is meant as a modest contribution to that self-knowledge and knowledge of the nature of oppression.

Gambia:West Africa: Is the Sub-Region a Periphery of Coups, Conflicts, Violence and Vengeance (Part IV)

West Africa:  Is the Sub-Region a Periphery of Coups, Conflicts, Violence and Vengeance (Part IV)

By Binneh s Minteh, Former Gambian Army First Lieutenant. Newark, New Jersey

When one quickly analyzes the current trend of West Africa’s turbulent political landscape, it could be argued that the deadly peripheral political vulnerability of the sub-region is far from becoming a forgone tale, thus emboldening the region as reaching the point of departure confidently argued by several scholars of contemporary African Affairs.  Recent events in Guinea-Conakry that resulted to the deadly shooting of over 157 innocent civilians, the raping of innocent women and girls, the widespread dismissals, detentions and arrests across the senior echelon of The Gambian Armed Forces, and the political bigotry that propelled a hijacking of the constitution in Niger - constitutional changes that gave the incumbent President a third term mandate in a flawed election - has indeed raised several eyebrows.

…Jammeh’s Betrayal Schemes Hatched Against Mandingka Officers Exposed

Jammeh Should Be Apprehended And Put In Jail

Gambia’s President Yahya Jammeh is hatching a dangerous betrayal schemes against Mandingka army officers. Chief of Defense Staff Major General Massaneh Kinteh, Deputy CDS Yankuba Drammeh, and General Lamin Bojang of the state guards should watch their back. The recent promotion of the above named officers, is  nothing but a “political bait” calculated to get rid of them , as he did to General Tamba and co. Yahya Jammeh is playing mind game with our country’s security forces. It is about time for someone to risk his or her life to replace this mentally challenged person calling himself a President. Jammeh wants to destroy the good men, and women of our armed forces before his inevitable demise.

Jammeh Threatens To Sack Gay And Lesbian Soldiers In Gambia

Gambia’s President Yahya Jammeh says he will sack gay and lesbian army officers serving the country’s military. The Presiden who was addressing the newly promoted army chiefs, said lesbianism is a “ taboo” in the army, and therefore warned  soldiers to desist from such practices, which he describes  as “evil” and ungodly. “We will not encourage lesbianism and homosexuality in the military. It is a taboo in our armed forces. I will sack any soldier suspected of being a gay, or lesbian in The Gambia. We need no gays in our armed forces,” Jammeh said. The Gambian leader, who recently threatens to behead gays in the West African country, said soldiers whose sexual orientation is gay should contemplate leaving the army, as his Government have zero tolerance for gays. The President advised the army chiefs to monitor the activities  of their men, and deal with soldiers bent on practicing lesbianism in the military.

Gambia:An Open Letter to Kukoie Samba Sanyang-Writes Mathew K Jallow

An Open Letter to Kukoie Samba Sanyang

By Mathew K Jallow

Dear Kukoie,

The past twenty-eight years could not have been easy for you, living the life a transient, and traveling from one strange country to another, like a vagrant. I get it. For I have been there and done that, although not as long as you. Nonetheless, the crushing experience of feeling that sense of homelessness we both experienced is still the same. But, fast forward to now. From what you have been writing, it appears both of us share the same passionate attitude towards our criminal compatriot, Yahya Jammeh, however, that is where our two similarities end. Over the past many years, you have written numerous articles espousing your political attitudes, thought and aspirations. It would appear that you still harbor that same ambition to lead The Gambia as you did more than two decades ago. Is any thing wrong with that? Of course not! It is your birth right to aspire to the highest office of the land, but your lengthy articles, a must read for a few who are still curious about you, are absolutely boring to me due to their rambling nature, lack of clarity, and incoherence.
