Koalack, Senegal-The Gambia/Senegal border closure will no doubt cause inconvenience for travelers planning to attend the annual Ziarra Leone Niassene in Kaolack scheduled for this weekend, Freedom Radio Gambia can reveal. As such, the Caliph General of the Leona Niassene is appealing to both Yahya Jammeh and his Senegalese counterpart President Macky Sall to reopen the border in the interest of peace and free movement of goods and people.  The Caliph was speaking to the press in Senegal yesterday.

The annual Niassene Ziarra has been scheduled for Saturday. The Caliph General told the press that he has received several phone calls from his followers in The Gambia, who told him that the border closure is going to prevent them from attending this year’s Ziarra. The Caliph personally appealed to President Sall and Jammeh to use their good offices and reopen the border to facilitate the safe passage of his followers to Koalack.

The Caliph said he has daughters, who are married in The Gambia. But in view of the recent border closure, his daughters couldn’t visit home. He said there shouldn’t be border closure between the two countries—citing the geographical proximities and cultural ties between The Gambia and Senegal.

Meanwhile, the Senegalese Transport Union is still adamant on its quest to have the border closed. The Union is protesting against the recent ferry tariff increment by The Gambian government. They said the tariffs are too exorbitant.
