Gambia’s Supreme Islamic Council members on Sunday, met with President elect Adama Barrow. The delegation was led by the Imam Ratib of Banjul, Cherno Kah. Also among the delegation was the Banjul Muslim elders led by Alieu Mboge.

Mohamadou Lamin Touray is the President of the Supreme Islamic Council. Mr. Touray in his speech said: “ We are here to congratulate your electoral victory. We are praying for peace, stability, and tranquility.”

“We members of the Supreme Council are here to work with any government in place. We pray for national reconciliation, peace, tranquility for the president-elect and the people of The Gambia,” Touray added.

This followed a meeting outgoing dictator Yahya Jammeh had with the Muslim and Christian leaders in the country. Mr. Jammeh was asked to step down in the interest of peace during the Thursday meeting. Mr. Jammeh was reportedly told to accept the will of the people and God to “reconsider his decision and accept the result of the 1 December election which he lost.”
