Gambia: Shakeup In The Police: IGP Sonko, And Landing Bojang To Be Removed; Abdoulie Sanyang To Takeover From Sonko; Gunshots Heard In Kanilai!

Gambia’s Inspector General of police (IGP) Yankuba Sonko, is about to be fired, or has already been fired. He is likely going to receive his letter of disappointment in coming hours. A source in the know said a major shakeup has hit the police force. Mr. Sonko is going to be replaced by the recently reinstated Commissioner of Admin Abdoulie Sanyang. Mr. Sanyang was dismissed from the force on alleged corruption related allegations. IGP Sonko, is still in his office, but sources said his firing is imminent. The decision was reached before Adama Barrow’s recent trip to Congo.

Also to be replaced is Landing Bojang, the Commissioner of Operations. Mr. Bojang, is going to be replaced by Lamin King Colley, the former Commissioner of police Licensing. Mr. Colley, was dismissed and charged with abuse office by the former administration of Yahya Jammeh. He was subsequently convicted, but later pardoned. He is a felon. He is a native of Kombo Brikama.

Based on the information, we received Mr. Colley, is going to be the new Operations Commissioner. Landing, is going to be redeployed outside Banjul.

In another development, a source at the police headquarters said the commander of the police intervention unit (PIU) Famara Jallow, has been transferred to Basse. He has been replaced by his Deputy Omar Darboe. 

In another Gambian news, fighting has been reported in Kanilai, dictator Jammeh’s home village. Gunshots could be heard in the village. The soldiers had an altercation with the villagers. We are monitoring developments.  We will keep you posted with developments.
