There is a strong security presence in Banjul. Armed soldiers have been patrolling the streets of the Capital Banjul and its surrounding areas. The heavy security presence is causing panic in some quarters within the country. This followed a planned celebration of dictator Yahya Jammeh’s twenty one years in power. Jammeh came to power in July of 1994. He overthrew the then administration of President Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara.
In a televised addressed last night, Jammeh used the occasion to reassure his countrymen about his regime’s determination to transform the country as an economic superpower. He encouraged Gambians to grow and eat what they grow. He also talked about the need for Gambia to fish and eat the fish they catch.
Jammeh also said his government will no longer rely on the World Food program to feed school going students. He said with the diversification agriculture, he confident that Gambia’s food production should be able to feed students.
It is not clear if Jammeh will address any parade this morning to mark his 21 years rule. He addressed the nation on the eve of the July 22 anniversary.
