Abuja, Nigeria-It’s now official! Edward David Singhateh is the new Vice President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). Mr. Singhateh, who is now a lawyer, by profession, was treated for a dinner by the Africa bloc. The dinner was held in Abuja on Saturday night, witnessed by diplomats and high ranking members of ECOWAS.
At the same dinner, a sendoff ceremony was also held for Singhateh’s predecessor. Singhateh, was officially named as the new success of the outgoing ECOWAS VP. The former Junta Vice Chairman, was beaming in smiles, as he took the mantle of leadership from the former VP of the African bloc.
Speeches were delivered at the sendoff dinner. The Banjul delegation is expected to return to Banjul the next morning. Singhateh’s confirmation as the ECOWAS VP was unanimously welcomed by the ECOWAS countries present.
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), has unanimously elected Gambia’s former Junta Defense Minister and Vice Chairman Edward David Singhateh, as the bloc’s Vice President, the Freedom Newspaper can authoritatively report. Mr. Singhateh’s election as ECOWAS VP, was finalized yesterday at an extraordinary session in Abuja, Nigeria, according to competent and dependable sources. Mr. Singhateh, flew to Nigeria, over the weekend, with a Government delegation, where he was nominated and subsequently voted as the VP of the African bloc.
A source writing to us said: “Pa Nderry, thought you want to know that Edward Singateh, has been awarded the position of Vice President of ECOWAS. He is in Abuja, for the past days wrapping it up. Look into it.”
Prior to our source contacting us, we received a scanty information about Edward Singhateh, leaving Banjul, during the weekend to take up an appointment. We promised to dig into the story further. We can now authoritatively report that Edward Singhateh, is the Vice President of ECOWAS.
Edward Singhateh’s late father is a Gambian, while his mom is a British. He grew up in the United Kingdom, and later resettled to The Gambia, together with his Dad, Mum, and other siblings.
After graduating from High School, Edward briefly worked with the Jawara government, before enrolling into the defunct Gambian National Army. He was among the pioneers of the July, 22nd 1994 coup, which toppled the thirty years Jawara rule. He has occupied various portfolios in Jammeh’s government before he was fired.
It was this past weekend that Jammeh handpicked Edward to represent Gambia at the ECOWAS Vice Presidency elections. Singhateh has emerged as the suitable candidate for the post. He was unanimously elected.
Despite being linked to extra-judicial killings, especially the murder of former Finance Minister Ousman Koro Ceesay, the African bloc, has admitted a man of troubled past into their organization. This led to the question: Does ECOWAS really vets its officials before electing them into office? In the case of Edward, ECOWAS hasn’t vetted him properly. There was no due diligence conducted on such a questionable character. The rest is history now.
In the next few days, the news of Edward Singhateh’s appointment or election as ECOWAS VP is going to dominate the airwaves of GRTS and the pro-government Daily Observer Newspaper. Just watch..
