In times of war, women and children are usually accorded special protection. The impoverished nation of The Gambia, is not at war at this time, but the government is cracking down on women and children, following attempts to suppress a peaceful protest march organized by the main opposition. A four week old baby, was detained on Monday, together with her mama, the Freedom Newspaper can reveal.
Ms. Kaddy Samateh, who goes with her husband’s last name Kaddy Fatty, was picked up by Gambia’s security forces on Monday, at an opposition procession march. She and her baby were both detained at the Police Intervention Unit (PIU) Headquarters in Kanifing. She was later remanded in prison, while her breastfeeding four week child was under the custody of the PIU. The innocent child has been separated from her detained mum. Now the child is at the mercy of dictator Yahya Jammeh’s rogue security agents.
It should be noted that Ms. Kaddy Fatty’s husband Modou Fatty, was arrested together with Lawyer Ousainou Darboe of the main opposition United Democratic Fatty. Mr. Fatty has since been under state custody.
The lady’s only perceived crime was attending a peaceful opposition march demanding for the release of the detainees. She has now joined her husband in prison.
The international community, and human rights organizations, should take note of the abduction and the illegal imprisonment of Kaddy Fatty’s child. Kaddy’s child has been denied the right to be breastfed by her mom.
The Jammeh madness needs to end. Women and children are out of bound in times of crisis. They should be spared. In fact, all living souls should be spared.
A Gambian mother, who reached the Freedom Newspaper said: “I am appealing to your Newspaper to please highlight Kaddy Fatty’s story. This lady, is a victim of state repression. She and her baby have been taken captive by Yahya Jammeh’s thugs. I am devastated right now. My heart is bleeding.”
The police command is yet to comment on the story.
