Gambia’s Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has finally accepted registration of politician Mama Kandeh’s newly formed political party, the Freedom Newspaper can report. Mr. Kandeh has fulfilled all the registration requirements, our sources at the IEC have intimated. Kandeh, has also paid the amount required for political parties to be registered, our source added.
The Gambia Democratic Party is now a legitimate political party, which can contest for public office. The IEC is yet to make a formal announcement about the inclusion of Mama Kandeh’s party among the existing registered political parties in the country.
According to sources, the IEC Chairman Mr. Njie is expected to issue a press release in coming hours to inform Gambians about the latest development. Sources said Mr. Kandeh has been notified by the IEC that his application has been approved by the IEC after weeks of foot-dragging on the matter.
This followed a radio program in which the Freedom Radio Gambia proprietor Pa Nderry M’Bai accuses the IEC of discriminating at Mama Kandeh’s following the Commission’s apparent failure to approve Mama’s application. Now, we can report that Mama’s application to form a political party has been approved by the IEC Chairman Mamar Njie.
